Copy of Stone Tablet
Tablets (Paleography); Church of the East monasticism and religious orders; Christianity; Missionaries
This is a copy of a stone tablet found in the Noyes Collection. It could have been supporting material for one of Henry's sermons describing the widespread proliferation of Christianity. The stone tablet is now housed in the Stele Forest or Beillin Museum in Xi'an, China. According to Columbia University, the stone tablet was found in 1625 and is in both Syriac and Chinese. It describes Nestorian Christian missions in China between the years 635 and 781. Nestorian Christianity argues that the divine and human natures of Christ are independent of one another.

"Up the North River"
River boats; Furniture; Cities and towns; Tracts; Pleiades; Buddhist monasteries; Cormorants; Caves
Harriet travels along the North River in November on a boat called a "Ho-tan" with Mr. Piercy, Miss Radcliffe, and the Whiteheads from the English Wesleyan Mission. They furnished their cabins from their houses. Harriet details their travels, discussing how they handed out books and tracts in small towns. They also handed out tracts at a Confucian temple. During their journey, they paid no heed to potential pirates. They anchored by a Buddhist monastery, where they climbed to a number of temples for a better view. Mr. Whitehead gave a Buddhist priest a tract. They passed through the countryside where natural features were of spiritual significance, and eventually took Blind Boy's Pass. They saw natives fishing with domesticated cormorants. After enjoying the scenery of Kau Yam Shan, they proceeded to Ying-Tak, where they met some opposition as foreigners. A favorable wind carried them to Fatshan and the rest of the way to Canton.

"Extract from a pamphlet now being sold in the streets of Canton"
Sino-French War, 1884-1885; Peace treaties; Foreign visitors; Criminal justice, Administration of--China; Christian converts; Christianity--China; Church buildings--Vandalism; Viceroys
It is stated in the pamphlet that foreigners persuaded "unprincipled" people to join the Church, thus allowing them to escape the law. Consequently, a lot of people disagree with this so burning and destruction of Church buildings is a prevalent issue. The pamphlet lists several possible approaches that may discourage people from converting to Christianity. It also mentions strategies so as to persuade foreigners to accept a new system that "filters" converts. This strategy is based on the principle that many converts are ashamed of being converts in public and foreigners, most likely, dislike this. The foreigners' interference in China's criminal justice system should not happen under the Treaty of Tientsin, but denouncing its violation may cause trouble.

"A Chinese Account of Christianity"
Theology; Confucianism; Taoism; Christianity and other religions--Taoism; Confucianism--Relations--Christianity; Gazettes; Jesus Christ; Jesus Christ--Crucifixion
One of the Noyes missionaries, most likely Harriet, is sending back home a translation from a Chinese gazette summarizing Christianity. The account tells the story of Jesus as a mortal man who had no powers but was a physician. He renounced his biological father and claimed to be a heavenly host, starting his own sect. They compare this to figures in Taoism and Confucianism. He was crucified for his sins in not worshiping his ancestors or other gods, but his followers claim he rose again in order to spread their religion.
