Letter from H.V. Noyes to Father, July 3, 1874
Birthdays; Missionaries; Households; Councils and synods; Cost; Chapels
Henry writes to his father about how they happened to have a social evening in the house where he was staying that they thought to be a celebration of his father's birthday. The last time the "social" met was for Hattie's birthday last year. Henry has been thinking about going to the synod. The board will be going over expenses and deciding who will be going. Henry does not think that anyone will be going home except Dr. Happer. Henry will be going to San-Ui and will be there for about a week and plans on going to synod right when he gets back. He is also going to Chefoo and wants to go to Peking but does not think that will happen. Their Chinese teacher wants to go home with them and study for two to three years at Wooster.

The winter has been mild and he remarks that time is passing by "after another of our neighbors is dropping into the grave". Recently, Varnum bought fifty acres in the middle of town for four dollars an acre. He wishes Miss Walker a safe and pleasant journey and gives her travel advice.

Letter from Varnum to Josiah, June 17, 1836
Presbyterian Church--Government; Birth; House construction; Bible--Study and teaching
Varnum updates Josiah on the difficulties his illness has imposed on preaching to his Guilford congregation and attending the Pittsburgh General Assembly, as well as on the birth of his second son, Henry. He hopes Josiah will visit him in his newly-built house. He believes Bible study to be of little significance among contemporary Christians and anticipates a division in the Presbyterian Church. He would like to see Zoa come from New England to teach and wants to start a new school.

Letter from Henry, August 3-14, 1877
Travel; Friends and associates; Landscapes; Preaching; Pastures; Family; Railroad travel; Indians of North America; Congregational churches; Mountains; Cost
Henry writes this letter to share his journey from Cleveland to San Francisco. Henry met some of his old classmates in Cleveland before heading off by train. When in Chicago he recommends getting a seat on the northside of the car where the scenery is best. At most stops, Henry attends a sermon of some kind. He describes plains, hills, canyons, rivers, mountains, capes, and lakes along his travels--each unique to the area. While in Cheyenne, Henry met someone who used to preach with his father in Wooster. Arriving in San Francisco, Henry makes notes of all the hills. He has dinner with Dr. and Mrs. Kerr. Dr. Kerr mentions that he has been teaching English to a young Chinese lawyer for $40 a month. The sleeping car from Chicago to San Francisco was around $34.

"Up the North River"
River boats; Furniture; Cities and towns; Tracts; Pleiades; Buddhist monasteries; Cormorants; Caves
Harriet travels along the North River in November on a boat called a "Ho-tan" with Mr. Piercy, Miss Radcliffe, and the Whiteheads from the English Wesleyan Mission. They furnished their cabins from their houses. Harriet details their travels, discussing how they handed out books and tracts in small towns. They also handed out tracts at a Confucian temple. During their journey, they paid no heed to potential pirates. They anchored by a Buddhist monastery, where they climbed to a number of temples for a better view. Mr. Whitehead gave a Buddhist priest a tract. They passed through the countryside where natural features were of spiritual significance, and eventually took Blind Boy's Pass. They saw natives fishing with domesticated cormorants. After enjoying the scenery of Kau Yam Shan, they proceeded to Ying-Tak, where they met some opposition as foreigners. A favorable wind carried them to Fatshan and the rest of the way to Canton.

Section of Letter from Hattie and Electa
Anniversaries; Songs; Impersonation; Humor; Drama; Parties
Harriet writes about a fiftieth-anniversary party she and Electa attended. Mr. Fisher sang a song called "Get a wiggle on", with Mr. Henry interjecting. Dr. Niles joked that Elmira College wanted to give out an L.L.D. and that she decided to accept it. MacNamara's Band played, consisting of Drs. Dobsin, Creighton, Fisher, and Boyd. Miss Butler impersonated an old lady, complaining that she wanted to buy some red tape only to discover the Presbyterian Mission had bought it all itself. She said that Paul was not in favor of Union, as he wouldn't even marry. A drama took place centered around South China missionary Mrs. Kunkle and her struggle to manage mission accounts. Electa and Hattie found the party to be the greatest they had ever attended.

Letter from Nancy to Brother, August 10-17, 1840
Physicians; Bible--Reading; Vision disorders; Stomach--Diseases; Bible--Numerical division
Nancy writes to Varnum considering their father's final moments. He first complained of heat in his hands, which the physician remedied. On August 8, he received more treatment and was prescribed herbs. Zoa was recalled from school. He said that Varnum had been good to Nancy and wished his poor vision hadn't impaired his Bible reading. He felt as though he would soon be called to Heaven. He became restless as he approached death, moving from place to place. Mr. Foster performed the funeral service, and he was buried near Mr. Pratt. Before his death, he gave his will to Nancy and Augustus. Nancy asks Varnum to remind Lois to write to her.

Letter from A. W. Loomis to Henry, March 13, 1889
Pamphlets; Witnesses; Census; Foreign workers; Sex workers; Adoption; Abuse of rights; Chinese Americans
Loomis writes to Henry rebuking his claims of abuse of the Chinese immigrant population. He claims that while the acts have reduced the rates of immigration, the average Chinese wage has risen. He relates that his own employees are paid well and are always helped should they ask. Steamship fares have been fixed to allow for cheaper passage. He denies all claims of slavery among the Chinese, stating that while sometimes women are sold to brothels, most children are adopted rather than sold for debt and that the system of concubines is rather Abrahamic. He advises Henry to more carefully weigh his statements in the future.

Letter from Char. Vrooman to Mr. Noyes, June 10, 1874
Letters; Missionaries; Travel; Steamships; Malaria
Vrooman writes to Mr. Noyes, thanking him for a favor, and happy to be reminded of Mrs. McChesney. He is pleased to hear that the Noyes' Canton (Guangzhou) mission circle has grown. Vrooman was stationed in Japan before conflicts made it inconvenient for him. Vrooman continues to detail his life, including the fact that he is glad to be rid of Siamese malaria since his return, as well as the landscape. Mr. McGaloway will return to the field by way of a San Francisco steamer in August, while Mr. George will stay for a few years. The Board is disappointed with his conduct towards other missionaries in Bangkok. Cornelis Bradly returned from there due to poor health. Vrooman concludes by further discussing their mutual contacts.

Section of Letter to Clara, May 21, 1918
World War, 1914-1918; Anniversaries; Missionaries; Dinners and dining
Harriet writes to Clara saying that she cannot be happy until the cruel war is over; yet, she is hopeful for the future. There was a banquet thrown by the Presbyterian Mission to celebrate Harriet's fifty years as a missionary in China. In her speech, she remarked that although she has met many friends, she is the only one who can say she can look back over fifty years in China. She spoke of changes and the hope she has. Their Mission increased from six to seventy in the past fifty years and she hopes that it continues to grow.

Section of "A Plea for the Chinese" by Henry
Chinese Americans; Emigration and immigration law; Opium abuse; Chinese--Religion; Kearney, Denis, 1847-1907
Henry criticizes the exclusionary proclamations of Denis Kearney towards Chinese immigrants. He explains that every claim towards the Chinese invasion of America is reciprocal to American actions in China. He adds that statistics reflect a decline in the Chinese-American population. To Henry, the spiritual state of China demands missionary action rather than the military. He compares their fortitude with that of Native American laborers.

In this letter to Varnum, Josiah writes about their father's sickness; he had a seizure so Josiah thinks that he might die soon. Then, he informs Varnum that their cousin Edward Noyes has died (apparently of typhus fever) and includes a reflection about mortality and the soul. Josiah describes the funeral, the sermon, Edward's last few months, his personality, his will, and his widow's future plans. A few nights ago, Josiah had an accident on the road in Newton so he is asking the town for an indemnity. He says that "politics are now all the rage in this region" and mentions Governor Marcus Morton. Mr. Miller predicted that the coming of Christ would take place in 1843.

Letter from Mattie to her "Precious Sister," June 7, 1879
Birthdays; Christian converts; Baptism; Schools; Travel
Martha wishes Sarah a happy birthday, even though it was on June 2nd. Then, she writes about girls and women applying for baptism. Some of the girls' parents were against them joining the church. Mr. Culbertson will come to Canton and Mattie says that they will "not have the pleasure of entertaining him" since he is a single man.

Letter from Martha to Clara
Family; Diseases; Cold weather conditions; Finance; Missionaries
Martha writes to Clara about Frank's illness and how it is probably a great drain on his strength. Henry and Harriet have both left and Martha is feeling rather lonely but is looking forward to seeing them again. Martha has been looking over the finances even though she does not think it is her greatest strength. Martha tells Clara that she's so sorry to hear about Sarah's illness and thinks that Sarah should stop teaching for a while.
