Canton April 14th 188[?7?]
Dear Clara
The last two mails [--have been--]
from home have mentioned the severe
illness of Mr Notestine. I am very
sorry indeed that the people pressed
him so hard with work. When after
long waiting they have got [--st--] such a good
minister they should be careful of
him. What is most in our minds
here is the going home of Bella
and the children. They are getting
ready now and expect to go
by the steamer following the one
that takes this letter which leaves
here April 26th - and is advertised to
[--leave--] arrive at San Francisco May
20th . Bella hopes to arrange to
reach Chicago May 28th spend May 29th
Sabbath there and them start again
Monday May 30th. We have no time
table here so do not know just when

they will reach Cleveland but bella
can telegraph ahead and I hope
some of you can meet [--here--] her
there. I think she has written to
Hattie that she will stop and see
you on the way + give you an opportunity
of seeing her and the children --
How I would like to be at that meeting-
But I will imagine it. It seems to
me that the arrangement wE have
made is for the best and thought
I am sure to feel very lonesome yet
a year will slip away before very
long. I hardly expected when I came
away that I would see father + mother
again but now I am hoping that I
may. The weather is getting
quite warm and being damp
is what we call sticky weather.
Poor little Helen Henry still is confined
to her bed - she has had a long
weary time of it. They are
afraid her spine will be
affected. They hope to take her
to Macao soon. Dr Kerr and

Mattie are also thinking of going for
a short time. The Whites got
off yesterday + to-day with all
their furniture. They have changed
with the Fultons the latter coming
to occupy Dr Happer's old house
We have good news in regard
to the work in the country from
almost every direction. From
the East where Mr Henry made
a [?flying?] visit to Shek Lung and
Liu Po and baptised I think
seven -- from the South where
Mr White spent a month at
the stations in the San Ui +
San Ning + Hoi Ping districts-
from the North West at Lien Chow
where Mr Wisner Dr Swan and
[?Kwan Loy?] have just returned.
8 were baptised at lien Chow
and seven at Sam Kong a f
few miles away + a number of
those baptised are substantial men
of Considerable Education. What

is very unusual in a new
station 8 of those baptised were
women- Dr Graves is away on
a trip to Shek Kok and Tsing tin
He finds the people at Tsing [illegible]
more friendly than he has ever known
them before. Dr Thomson writes from
Yeung Kong that he + his chapel have
had a [?stoning?] but he barely holds
the fort I hope they will be able
to keep on there -- They are [illegible]
changes against him of poisoning
wElls etc etc- He [illegible] there
stone's originiate with the native
doctors whose craft is in danger
Now I must close as I have
other letters to write [illegible] a prayer
meeting to attend this afternoon
Your Aff Bro
-- Henry --
