Their house has had many visitors lately, including from a doctor who has been fixing their teeth. Mattie is going to stay behind when Harriet and Henry return the next year. She writes that Miss Shaw's health is still in question, but she is going to write to her and see.

my dear Em -
Only one day more
and then January will be
gone and I hope that before
the End of January 1876 we
shall be safely on our way to
American [u]Homeward Bound[/u] .
I want to see the school nicely
started again, the first twelve
girls graduated and then I
shall feel that my Eight years
work in China is finished and
I am ready to go home and
get "[u]renovated[/u]" for a new start.
I feel [u]so thankful[/u] that I have
never yet been obliged by illness
to lose a single day from
work nor cost the Mission a
single cent on account of poor
health I mean. There our
company has come, Mr James from
the U S S Yantic. He is from
New Hampshire and comes
nearly Every day generally in the
Eve and makes good long Evenings
stays till Eleven or twelve-o-clock.
HE is good company and
we have [u]lots of fun[/u]. HE makes
us think some of Edward.
The sailors from the Yantic
come "more or less" Every day.
Poor fellows, it is such a treat
for them to get off the ship that
we can hardly find it in our
hearts to wish they would not
come so much, and stay so
long but it does break in
upon our time sadly.
WE have all been having our
teeth doctored. Dr Rogers has
been up for a few days from
Hongkong and all Canton,
the foreign residents, have been
having their teeth sharpened +c
Henry patronized him to the
amount of 3 dollars I paid
him Eight and Mattie Eighteen.
HE said Henry has [u]powerful[/u]
teeth and pronounced mine
very good . I hope that that
I can make them last me
as long as I need any I do
not know as I could Ever
get up the requisite amount of
courage necessary to get false teeth.
Poor Mattie has had a hard
time with one of hers since
it was filled but we hope that
the worst is over now.
Dr Rogers is also a New Hampshire
man from Northern NH, he
knew several Noyes s there
and said we were like the
race. He is a very pleasant man.
WE have been having some
pretty cold weather now it is a
little warmer. Chinese New Year's
will soon be here. Henry now is
sitting on the other side of the
table writing to Edward. Mattie
is writing with one and
holding her handkerchief to
her face with the other, comforting
[u]that[/u] tooth. Henry just
looked up and said [u]Oh my[/u]
next year we will be having a
nice time. WE shall feel
badly about leaving Mattie
here but I really do not see
how it would have been
possible for me to have thought
of going home if [--unless--] she had
not come . Whenever we
get time to think of anything
now-a-days we think about
[u]going home[/u] . I have been
counting [u]the days[/u] for so long
so many years - and now
they begin to seem [u]few[/u] in
comparison with what
they were. Miss Shaw we hope is
getting better but we do not
feel very sanguine about her.
I would not be surprised
at all if Mattie and
Lucy would be left with
whatever work there is in
hand when we go home.
They did more work last
year than both Miss Shaw
and Lillie. And now
I must say good-bye
and I shall stil have
a few minutes to write
to Miss Shaw. The Happer
children are Expecting to go in
March . Ever your loving Hattie.
