Description
Harriet wishes Emily a happy 29th birthday and thanks her for the letters she received for her own birthday. She is especially thankful for the sympathy she received for the loss of the school building. She tells Em that she was afraid that nobody would support her in re-launching the foundation after the building burned down. Even though Hattie is sad, she does not feel that this hiatus is hindering the work they have done so far. The new building might be done by the end of May. Harriet hopes that her father recovers from his fall so that he can go to the General Assembly meeting in Cleveland.

My own dear Em -
Another birthday for
you and this time you are
twenty-nine. I hope there are
still many happy returns of the
day in store for you and that
some of them we may be privileged
to spend together. Perhaps the
next one a [u]year from to-day[/u] will
find us under one roof .
I received my birth-day letters
four days ago. thank you all
very much for remembering to
write them and Especially
for all your words of sympathy
for us in the loss of our school-house
This last mail brought the
first replies to our letters telling
of our loss and I do indeed
feel grateful for the sympathy
of them so far away. Thank
you too for the lines you sent
"The Lord will Provide". Every
word I believe nor have I ever
for a moment doubted or been
unable to [u]feel fully[/u] assured that
all was for the best and yet
that does not take away the
sense of loss and I can hardly
think or write of it now without
shedding tears. With your
letters came one from Mrs Perkins
in answer to mine of Jan 12th.
It was such a nice letter and
very comforting. The writes of
making an appeal for us
through Woman's Work and
adds "For you could not doubt
for a moment that we would
come to your help in this
time of your need [u]to whatever
Extent[/u] you might call upon
us She says we "need not
feel their being discouraged for
the record of good done in the
building now gone is one that
might satisfy the most doubting
contributor to its erection three years
ago". I am so glad they feel so
I was afraid it might seem
to them as though it had
been in use so short a time
that it might discourage them
to think of beginning at the
foundation again. But it is
only the building that must be
commenced again. we do not
feel that Even this long vacation
is hindering the work and the
good that has been accomplished
by means of the first school house
no flames can destroy.
The new building will soon be
completed we hope the close
of this month will see it finished
Then we are planning to
take a trip into the country
while the paint is drying and
then come back and call
our scattered flock together
again. WE have been having
such a cool spring for which
we are very thankful. Now the
4th of May we have not had
a single day of [u]hot[/u] weather
It is clearing away to-day so I
presume it will not be long
before it will be very warm it
is so late in the season -
I hope to hear that the girls
are going to spend another
year at Wooster. WE were all
glad to be assured by Sarah's
last letter from Columbus
that Sarah is really feeling
well. I hoped these last
letters would tell us that
Father had Entirely recovered
from his fall. I do hope he
will get over it soon. I hope
he will be able to go to Cleveland
when the General Assembly
meets there. If not perhaps Dr
Ellinwood and Mr Corbett may
see you all in Seville. I think
Mr Corbett will make you a
visit any way but I expect Dr
Ellinwood's time is always more
than full. WE are still looking
for the Sites s If they are
coming this spring they must
some soon for we are in
the last month now ---

To-day I have finished translating a little question
book on the New Testament which I doubt not we
shall find useful. Do you remember that it is
just this years to-day since we commenced our
S School?
Edward says you like best
to read what is written
across the tops of the page
so I must think of some
thing interesting. Shall
it be that a Chinese woman
is witting beside me talking
as fast as she can. There
is a rap at the door and
Ayau our table boy comes in
bringing a contribution
for the Social Herald Henry
is Editor for tomorrow Eve
And here comes Akwai our
major general with his account
books to take the
month's account so I
must adjourn writing
for the present.
May 6th-
Last night was our
Social eve. Henry + Miss
Taylor Editors. We had
a very pleasant time
we sung "[u]Trancadillo[/u]"
Dont you think we
are getting to pretty [?short?]
[illegible] for something to sing
[u]We do[/u]. However it is not so old here as with you.
