Harriet tells her father that it was Henry's birthday a little while ago so he received lots of letters from home. She informs him that Dr. Ellinwood and his wife reached home a month ago and that Mrs. Perkins now has $1500 to help towards building the new schoolhouse in Canton. The building is almost done, Harriet goes into detail about its appearance. Plans are being made to go to the country next week. Her mother did end up writing to the woman scholar who asked about her (in the previous letter) and the woman prizes the letter she received.

My dear Father,
Last steamer brought
Henry's birth-day letters so
there was not much for the
rest of us but we had the full
benefit of his . I am sorry to
hear that you were when
you wrote not yet Entirely
recovered from the effects of
your fall last winter but I
hope that when the cold
weather which seemed so loth
to leave you took its departure.
you gained strength faster.
I wonder if you would be
able to attend any of the
meetings of the General Assembly
I suppose the meetings are over
before this. WE learned by
the last mail that Dr
and Mrs Ellinwood reached
home of the 3d of May -
but we were sorry that no one
mentioned whether their health
was improved by the trip or not.
I do hope so and that [u]dear
Dr Ellinwood[/u] will continue to
be "our beloved Secretary" for
many long years to come.
Mrs Perkins writes that they
now have in hand $1500.00
given for the new school-building
Canton, and as they wish to
have it all appropriated to that
purpose the $ 500.00 which
we Expected to use from the
local fund can be appropriated
in some other direction -
I think they have done pretty
well as we wrote to them that
we would try and get along
with $ 500.00 But as we afterward
arranged to continue a part
of the Boarding School we
could not have had the
$ 500.00 which we expected
from that source . So now
this building will be the
ladies' Entirely as the other
one was. I am so very [u]glad[/u]
that they raised the money
so promptly and cheerfully
I was so afraid that some
of them might feel discouraged.
The building is almost finished
only a little painting remains
to be done. I wish so much
that you could see it now
when Every thing looks so fresh
and new and pretty.
The wood work is all [?grained?]
as it was before and they
have done it so nicely the
floors are in imitation of
slate marble, The rooms
are all twelve feet high
and it makes them look
much nicer than the former
one and in many respects
it is better but still my affections
cling to the memory all that
is left me of the old one. Did
I ever tell you that after the
school-house was burned the
bunch of keys that belonged
to it {that I had carried for
nearly three years Every night
bringing them up to my room}
remained and I thought I
would like to keep them always.
But we gave them to the servants
to open the door into the school-
house yard and some way or
other they were stolen or lost.
I felt very sorry at first, for it
seemed as though the last
link was broken. But I expect
it is just as well, and I have
long since almost Entirely
given up the practice of hoarding
up such relics .WE are hoping
to go into the country next week
as we want so much to have
a trip all together we four
this year and this will be
our only opportunity while
the school-house is getting
thoroughly dried. WE are
thinking so much about our
long voyage next year and
the meeting with the dear
home friends when we reach
its End. Some of the Chinese

have already begun to pray that we may reach home
safely and hope a happy meeting with the home friends.
