"City of Tokio"
Nov 18th 1877
My dear Mother -
We are getting well on our
way across the Pacific twelve days
out to-day. We are hoping very much
to reach Yokohama next week and
Canton the end of the week after.
I suppose there is not much chance
of it we should have to make
the voyage in twenty six days from
San Francisco to Hongkong and
the City of Tokio was thirty in coming
over the last time. If we do not get
into Hongkong in time to go up to Canton
on Saturday I hope we shall not
get in until the [?next?] week for the
last thing I would wish would
be to have to spend the Sabbath
in Hongkong. Some of our young
missionaries on board have quite
a gay time a Miss Pitman who
is going to Japan and young
Mr Talmage have a great time
teasing each other. She is full
of fun. Mrs Curtis furnishes us
with excellent music she has
attended the Musical Conservatory
at Oberlin for a year and
is a very fine player and a
beautiful singer. She and
Mr Curtis have been married
about two months and seem
a very nice couple. I imagine
their happiness will not wear
out as soon as in the case of some.
Miss Clarkson is a bright little
Yankee girl- all the way from
Boston. She has been a teacher
and spent several months in
Medway boarded I think she
said at Ms Metcalf's-
Mr McCanley reminds me
somewhat of "[u]fisher[/u]" in his
looks although he is larger. He
is very unsocial however has hardly
spoken to any one since he came
on board except Miss Kooser who
came from the same place in Pa
and is going to the same place in
[--Japan--] Siam. They seem to be
inseparable I cannot tell whether
it is her idea or his or whether it is
mutual but however that may be
they afford considerable amusement
to their fellow passengers. Mr Blether
told us last night that he had been
appointed a committee of one to wait
on them and urge them to have the
matter all settled the evening before
we reach Yokohama. Miss Eldred
rooms with Miss Kooser just opposite
us they are both pleasant girls.
and I doubt not will make
good missionaries. Mr & Mrs
Alexander have kept their room
most of the time She has been
very sea-sick says she only
wants to make one more
voyage that is back to America.
Miss [?Man?] our little Baptist
missionary says she thinks Mrs
Alexander would feel better if
Mr A-- did not look so [?fearfully?]
solemn all the time .Shall
I tell you how we sit at table
there are four small tables at
the head of [illegible] the purser Mr
[?Laynin?] sits next to him Lillie
then Hattie Mr Talmage & Miss
Clarkson- on the other side
the purser's right Lieut & Mrs
Adams of the US Navy {he is}
and Mr + Mrs Curtis. We
think we have a very nice table
although the next one where
Miss Pitman sits seems to
have the most fun Now I
have filled this letter up with
ship gossip. I do not know
whether it is hardly worth sending
but perhaps it will interest you -

我亲爱的母亲——今天十二天，
我们在横渡太平洋的路上越来越好。
我们非常希望下周能到达横滨，
下周末能到达广州。
我想我们应该在 26 天内从旧金山到香港的航程不太可能，
而东京市上次来港时是 30 岁。
如果我们周六不能及时到达香港去广州，
我希望我们下周才能到达，
因为我最不希望的就是不得不在香港度过安息日。
我们船上的一些年轻传教士度过了愉快的时光，
一位要去日本的皮特曼小姐和年轻的塔尔马奇先生玩得很开心。
她充满乐趣。
柯蒂斯夫人为我们提供了出色的音乐，
她在欧柏林音乐学院就读了一年，
是一位非常出色的演奏家和一位美丽的歌手。
她和柯蒂斯先生已经结婚两个月了，
看起来很不错。
我想他们的幸福不会在某些情况下尽快消失。
克拉克森小姐是个聪明的洋基小女孩——从波士顿一路过来。
她曾是一名教师，
并在梅特韦寄宿了几个月，
我想她是在梅特卡夫女士那里说的——麦坎利先生让我想起了他的长相，
尽管他更大一些。
他非常不合群，
但是自从他上船以来几乎没有和任何人说过话，
除了来自宾夕法尼亚州的同一个地方并要去泰国的同一个地方的 Kooser 小姐。
他们似乎是不可分割的，

我们认为我们有一张非常漂亮的桌子，
尽管皮特曼小姐坐的下一张似乎最有趣。

我不知道它是否不值得寄，
