Canton China
Aug 5th 1878
My dear Mother -
I have not but a
minute to write but I remember
that according to some
authorities Aug 5th is your
birthday so I will send
you just a line to tell you
that I am going to write to
you tomorrow. When we
get our mail off this morning
and our washing picking up
we are going down to Dr
Graves are going to spend a
week with them I expect
we shall have a very nice
[?time?] for they are of the
"excellent of the Earth" and
seem to be very fond of
the "dear sisters" as they call
us We were going last Friday
and were all ready but [--the--]
a heavy shower came up and

prevented for which we were
very glad as we wanted to
stay at home and get
our mail off -- I presume
you will hear from Mattie
direct by this mail and
so have later news than
I can give you - I do
not know whether we
shall get away for our
proposed country trip or
not I presume it is
doubtful will depend
something on what news
we get by the next mail
Give my love to the good
people in Seville my
sympathy to Mrs Beam
+ Mrs Chambers --
Ever your aff daughter
Hattie -
It is too bad to send you
such a little scrawl
