Letter from Hattie to Edward, September 30, 1880

Subject

Birthdays; Mail steamers; Missionaries; Nervous system; Nervous system--Diseases; Women physicians

Description

Harriet writes to wish Edward a happy birthday. She had thought that they had not received any letters from home in the last mail, but found out they had just been directed to Henry. Mattie is still sick with what the doctor says is a nervous condition and she must return home in the Spring. The missionaries of Canton want them to send more people but Harriet knows Dr. Happer would be upset if they sent the female doctor they have talked of sending. She hopes Edward will actually get this letter, as his last birthday letter was lost.

Canton China
Sept 30th 1880
My dear Edward -
Again Sept 30th
has come introducing
you to a new year of your
life - May it be happier
than any that have gone
before and may it bring
you abundant opportunities
of usefulness and strength
and ability to improve
them in the best possible
way . I cannot think
of anything better to wish
for you on this your
birthday morning . I
read an article in a
paper a few days since
which make me think of
you. It said the place
of Superintendent of a
Sabbath School was next

to that of the Minister
in influence. Our home
mail has come this morning
came up by the night
steamer - I sent up for
it and when it came
and I looked it over I
found to my disappointment
that every letter and
paper was for Dr Kerr
or Mr + Mrs Henry - But
at the end I found a
note from the Post Master
saying that our letters
had been sent to Henrys
so I have sent up there
for them and hope they
will come soon . It is
rather annoying to have
them go there under the
circumstances I suppose
we are sure of getting them
all but I would much
rather they would come

directly as they usually do -
I had a letter last night
written by Miss Norwood for
Mattie who was ill in
bed . Dr Scott says her
trouble is nervousness and
only nervousness which I
believe fully - He says she
must go home next spring.
I wish they would have
sent a lady out this fall
but I suppose they will not
unless that medical lady
appears. Dr Kerr would
like to have our new
missionaries Mr + Mrs White
and Mr Fulton take
half of his house . As the
Board has sent an
allowance for them to
rent they may as well
rent that as any place
and then Dr Kerr could

have the money to build
some more wards for the
Hospital as he wishes to do -
The house in which he lives
belongs to the Medical Society
not to the Mission . If those
three should come down
here and also a medical
lady as the Mission all think
she should if she comes at all
I dont know what Dr Happer
would do - The possibility of what
he might do suggests a story Mr
Henry was letting the other evening.
During the war he heard a Methodist
preacher reading an account of
some accurence which caused
the rebels to "gnash their teeth with
rage which he rendered
thusly" They garnished their
teeth with rags" Well this
makes four letters that I have
written while waiting for the
mail. I hope the letters
will soon come --

[Note: The following is written vertically on first page]
I enclose
a bookmark
I hope this
letter will
not share
the fate
of your
last birthday
letter. I am
sorry you
did not get
the Chinese dollar
I sent then. It was
a bright new
one with the
dragon their
national emblem on
Ever your loving Hattie
