Harriet writes to her mother about the mail and how it is her thirty-seventh birthday. Mattie still has a cold and will probably be returning to Ohio in June. Others are returning home too, Mr. and Mrs. Butler and Mrs. Lites with her children. She just heard of the death of Mr. McIlvaine who was a missionary in North China. There is a rumor that Miss Campbell of the Chiang Mai mission has been drowned. She was referred to by Mrs. Kerr as one of the young girls from Oxford. She had not been in good health as of recent. It was heard that she came down to Bangkok not too long ago.

March 5th 1881.
My dear Mother,
I have left my
writing for the mail this
time until now only a little
more than an hour is left
for writing I am sure you
will think of me to-day my
thirty seventh birthday.
It is a dull gloomy day here
I hope you have a little
more sunshine. We have
had so much of this weather
that Mattie has got quite
tired out. She is obliged to
keep so closely in her room
and does not seem to get
over her cold very well. If
we could have a little
bright weather I presume
it would make her feel
better. I expect you will
see her at home before many
months. I rather think she
will go by the City of Peking
which leaves here the 14th of
May and in that case she
will get home sometime in
June which will be a nice
time to get to Ohio. If I were
only going with her it would
not seem as though I had
been away but a little while
Mr and Mrs Butler
from Ningpo are going on
the same steamer.
You know he came out
with me so I know he
is an excellent travelling
companion. Mrs Lites
too is going home with her
children and I suppose
will go on the City of Peking.
The Stewardess is the same
one who was on the Colorado
when Mattie came out
and is very kind and
attentive. I wish Mattie
could get over this cold.
Otherwise she seems pretty
well now. We have just
heard of the death of Mr
McIlvaine a missionary in
North China of our Board.
Mr Corbett wrote to Henry
about it. He always speaks
of you and Father and
his visit at our home
when he writes. Mr
McIlvaine was a most
devoted missionary, he
lived most economically and
spent all that he could save
in work for the Chinese. His
Father left him $5000.00
and he used it all in
building a chapel and
hospital for the Chinese
which he gave to the
Mission. We have
also heard a rumor which
we still hope may not be
true that Miss Campbell
of the mission at Chieng Mai
has been [u]drowned[/u]. She was
one of those young ladies that
Mrs Kerr spoke of as the
little girls or young girls from
Oxford. She was quite young
only twenty I think when
they were here on their way
to Siam three years since.
She has not had good health
since she came out and
we heard a short time
since that she had come
down to Bangkok. We have
not any of us had letters from
the missionaries there we feel sure
if it is true they will write
as soon as they can.
We hear that Dr Dean may go home
this spring. If he does I hope he will
come here on the way.
