Harriet tells her mother that she received her package of birthday letters. She thinks that not many missionaries have such good friends back home. Harriet feels sorry for Mrs. Butler because her father has rheumatism in his arms so he cannot write her letters. Mrs. Butler hopes that his brother studies medicine and then work as a missionary. Harriet hopes that Mr. Fulton's sister comes to take care of him because most men need such help and he will not get a wife anytime soon. Harriet and a servant have been busy making a dress. The mission bought some of the shops behind the school with local funds. Mrs. Butler is now in charge of the boys' day school.

Miss Butler

charge of the

April 29th 1882
My dear Mother -
The last mail brought
me my package of birthday
letters. It was very good of
you all to write to me - "'Tis
sweet to be remembered" -
I dont think many missionaries
have friends at home who are
so good to write to them as
ours are. I feel sorry for
Miss Butler. She says her
Father used always to do the
writing to her and he
had rheumatism in his arms
so that he cannot write
without great difficulty and
so she gets hardly any home
letters. Her Father and
Mother are living quite alone
in Tyrone Pa. He is Eighty-two.
Her mother is his second
wife - there was a very large
family he had fourteen
children in all but some
of them are not now living.
She has a brother that she
hopes will study medicine and
come out as a missionary.
I wonder how Miss Fulton
is getting on with her studies.
Mr Fulton is staying up at
LinChau alone. None of
us thought that he would.
I hope his sister will come
out and take care of him
for like most men he needs
someone and I am afraid
he will not get a wife very
soon. Henry and his
family have just started
for a trip in the country
will Mr and Mrs Simmons
and Mrs Happer.
Last Monday Henry's
birthday Mrs Graves invited
us there. During the
evening she [u]happened[/u] to
tell about what a nice visit
she had at our home and
what exceedingly nice people
she [?found?] all our relatives.
B--- was sitting next to her
and of course was [u]obliged[/u]
to assent [illegible] to all
that she said although I
suppose it was with a
mental protect. To-day
is Mrs Henry's birthday also
Josie Kerr's. If you hear
anything of the whereabouts
or doings of that bad boy
you must let me know.
He never writes to his parents
scarcely I think it is months
since they have had a
letter. I am busy now
a days trying to get a dress
together. I had a little black
and white silk and I bought
some satin to piece it out +
hope I shall get quite a
nice dress. I have a good
serving woman to help me
but she cannot use the
machine. She used to sew
for Cynthia long ago I do not
get much time to sew just a
minute or two now and then
so it takes an age to get
anything done. But I think
she can make my other dresses
without much trouble or looking
after. I still have some
of the print that I brought
from home unmade -
And tell Em I have
not yet made up my
wrapper like hers. I
suppose you have lots
of serving to do at home
as usual. I remember
how we used Edward's
room for a "sew-room" as indeed
we did nearly every room
in the house while I was
at home -- Well I must
say good night with much love for all
