Title

Letter from Harriet to Clara, July 9, 1883

Subject

Health; Sickness; Fourth of July celebrations; Consulates; Anniversaries; Vacations; Travel

Description

Hattie writes about Dr. Kerr's and Mrs. Kerr's poor health. She thinks that they would be better in the United States. Then, Harriet writes about Kerr's 25th-anniversary party. They gifted them a tea set, a fan, a silver pin, and a chain. At the same time, there was a 4th of July celebration at the American Consulate. At first, Harriet thought that the Consul had invited all of the Americans but her plus the ones at Kerr's party. But, then she found out that it was not a general invitation. The Consul's wife and daughter are going back to the United States, so Harriet thinks that he is going to be lonely.

Canton
July 9[--0--]th 1883
My dear Clara -
I can only write
you a few lines this
morning. We for once
forgot that the mail
was going out so soon
until Friday evening Dr
and Mrs Graves were
here and they happened
to mention it. Saturday
afternoon we were going
out to a tea party at the
Consuls so we did not
have much time Sat
evening. Mrs Kerr is
going down to Hong Kong
this morning to stay for

two or three weeks Dr
Kerr went down last
week. They none of them
seem at all well we
feel quite trouble about
Dr Kerr he does not
seem at all strong What
a shame it is that
Josie does not do better
Hattie is just as nice
as she can be. She
is almsot as tall as I
am and is so fair and
pretty and as good as
she is pretty. She seems
very delicate. It would
doubtless be much better
for her health to be
in America. Some
time since she told me

they were going home in
two years. The fourth
of July was the twenty-fifth
anniversary of their marriage.
There were a few of us
there Mr + Mrs Henry. we
three + Mr Jeremiassen
We bought them a very
pretty tea set white with
green + gold bands
Miss Butler and I also
got a chain for Dr Kerr
and a fan + silver pin
for Mrs Kerr. There was
a party at the Consul's the
same evening and the
rest of our Mission were
there. We supposed at
first that all the Americans
were invited but ourselves
and were rather inclined
to be offended that we

were left out of a Fourth of
July celebration at the American
Consulate. but we found
afterwards that it was not
a general invitation The
Consul's wife and daughter
are going home soon. I
am very sorry for him
he will be lonesome.
We are beginning to feel
as though we must go to
Lin Chau before our vacation
is over. Miss Butler +
Miss Niles both seem to
need a change very much.
I though Miss Niles
was very strong but she
does not seem to be
keeping very well this
summer. None of us
want to go to Hong Kong
or Macao at all but we
would like to go into the country.

[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
Now I
must
say goodbye
with much
love for
you all
Ever yours
affly
Harriet.
