My dear Mary -
Yesterday we did not
get back from Shanghai until
eleven in the evening so I did
not get my full allowance of
sleep, and this afternoon thought
I would take a little nap
but when I wakened it was
nearly five-o-clock and the
afternoon was gone. But I
have managed nonetheless
to get nine letters written and
perhaps I can write a little
more this evening after such
a long nap. I am writing
short letters only a very few
more than one sheet. have
set my heart on getting
one hundred written and
think perhaps I shall
accomplish it. I did not
touch a pen for several days
after I came on board, it
seemed to take me some
days to get rested and
although I was not [u]really[/u]
sea sick I was not [u]really[/u]
comfortable . The other day
I scoured up my silver
pin the fern leaf one. and
really made it bright as
good as new. I tried at
home with the Electric [illegible]
but did not get the best results
Here I used soap washing it
in soap + water and then
put a little soap and do not
tell the Pacific Mail Co -
rubbed it on the carpet and
made it look perfectly bright.
And now I want to tell you
that those Chinese silver napkin
rings can be made perfectly
bright just like new ones.
At Mary Damon's one was
on the table which I rather
think I gave to them when
they were married eighteen
years ago and it was just
as bright as any of the
silver. And at Miss Butler's
sisters they had some of the
same bamboo pattern not

exactly the same style, and
they were bright too. Now we
can do what any one else
can .I tried one of them
with the [illegible] , and did
not succeed very well but I
am sure now if I could
have the chance I could
make them bright. As I cannot
just now you must do it
for mw and report the
result. If they will not come
bright any other way I would
use a nail brush and sapolio
They are so marked over I
am sure they would not
show any scratches and
that would certainly make
them bright. Dont let
Richard see them again
so black for the one at Mrs
Damon's was exactly like
them only it was nice and
bright. I remember that
the shopmen who work in
silver in Canton told me
to use [u]soap[/] to clean the
silver things. I am going
to send you the silver fern
leaf pin which I have
worn so long so that you
can see for yourself how
bright I made it. If it
is not bright when it reaches
you it will have tarnished
on the way, but I do not
think it will change. If you
will make those two napkin
rings bright you may have
it for yours "to have and
to hold-" if not you can
keep it and wear it for
me. The gong has sounded
to command us to dress for
dinner so I will close this
chapter on the silver
question wishing you all
success in the efforts which
I think will be encouraged
to undertake in the line
