She describes the classroom as atypical: it does not have what one would expect for it to be comfortable and she even thinks that those who teach do not have appropriate state certificates. In fact, she is not even sure whether a state exists let alone certificates. Mattie believes that the dear ones at home must think that mission work is too complicated just by reading her letters.

Dear Ones at Home,
How the days do
fly. I do not know at all
what becomes of them
Have taken a wee bit of
paper but I suppose more
sheets and smaller will do
as much good as less sheets
and longer ones. It is rain
ing and cooler than we have
had it before this many months
Am writing in the study with
the north window open. Desk
in the north west corner.
Since the women were
promoted to the front wards
we have bo to [u] Konging [/u]
Their tongues are never
still. Mrs Swan who has
been a splendid sleeper
says they are almost too
much for her. We do not
hear them at night or
in the early morning
There are some of the bright
est children here, "The hos-
pital school" has troops on
with such attention as it
can get. Have had between
60 and 70 since April and
they really get over a good
deal of ground considering
all things. You must not
think of a quiet schoolroom
fixed up in proper style
with all the appliances
of order and comfort and
a teacher who could carry a
state certificate provided
there was a state out here
and such things as state
certificates. No these little
sprigs of humanity sit
on the edge of beds, or on
the floor in the verandah,
or perhaps perched upon
the railing or at the top
of the stairs or some
where and their voices ring
out "Yin ti pirls" &c &c Then
we can never appear but
they want us to give them
a king tsai which things
{pictures they mean} are you
really up stairs and we gen
erally do not have time and
do not want to travel up
after them. These king
tsais are a grand help to
this new Just do not think
it would go on without them
Keep a supply on hand
thus far but will have to
get more soon or we
shall be minus. The womens
wards are not so full as they
have been but the men
are here all the same as in
the hot weather. Dr Niles
came back last Saturday
from a country trip of 2
weeks and Dr & Mrs Swan
leave next Tues. for a month
going with Mr Henry to
Lin Chau. We are always on
the move here Oh for "a
lodge in some vast wilderness"
for a little while we some
times say to ourselves.
But we shall have plenty
of time to rest bye and bye
The doctor has written
a letter fortunately so
you will get something
19th I planned to spend yester
day on writing letters home
but when I got in after
singing with the boys found
various things to look
after took accounts had to
look after my new boys
Akai is gone, and before
I knew it it was dinner time.

As the man is waiting. I will try and do more
next time. You
must think
from my
letters that
Mission work
is thrown in
God will
not require
of [u] us [/u] more
than we
can do.
