Nov 5th
My dear brother & Sisters
I should not think
you would ever write me
a line in answer to my
poor scrawls but they
carry a lot of love if nothin
else. We just live in a
rush from day to day in
fact it scarcely seems like
living sometimes. Mrs Con
diet a lady who is out on
rather an inspecting tour
come to us last Friday
but as we had two quests
She went to Hatties. A
ministers widow Pres. I sup
pose has a son of 18 in

Princeton College. The expen
ses of this trip are all [?borne?]
by Mrs Russell Sage of New
York city and she is unlimited
in regard to the matter. The
only direction she received was
to plan as she went in
regard to Strms, etc etc. She
seems very nice. Is visiting
all missions as she has
opportunity. Dr [?Peck?] from
North China I believe was
here when the last mail
went. We expect he will
remain until the middle
of this month. He is an M.D.
of the American Board on
his way home by way of India
Is very pleasant. Mr Plumb
and family are not coming
up and I am quite resigned
to the situation. Sat eve
expected himself wife 2 chil
dren and Miss Jewell but
they did not come. Then Mr

Plumb was to come on Wed
of this week but a letter this
morning announces that he has
given up the trip. Mr [?Throning?]
and his wife are to be here
about next week Thurs. I suppose
now when I tell you that my
cook has for the past week had
her hand tied up and suffering
from an abscess - that the table
boy is trying to do some of her
work and some of his own that
a little boy I got to help matters
along, in the space of two days
was on his back with fever
in the hospital you will ap
preciate how I was reconciled
not to have 6 guests at a time
This child has been [?drubbing?]
about as kitchen maid of all
work now more or less for the
past month {more rather than
less} and the prospect is this
thing will keep up for some
time to come.

But am quite well just now
so it does not much matter .
only I am very busy. The two
Drs go to Fatshan to morrow
so we shall be by ourselves
Bella had invited us up there
to take tea huts as the party is
broke up. Dr Niles and my
self are the only ones left to go.
Miss Johnstone has a sale
of articles the proceeds to be
given to the support of her
girls boarding school in Hongkong
We always feel like getting
something of her on that ac
count . The little nephews were
down last night to play croquet
They are such nice little
fellows but there is doubt
they are afraid of Bella. The
plan is for them to move
over to Fa ta living in the
school temporarily.

[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
to Mrs Stoakes and other friends - Mrs Beam It is din
ner time and I must see what is going in the
kitchen. Pray for
me now and then
all of you. No one
can need your
prayers more it seems
though I am
ashamed to make
the acknowledger
went when God has
done so much for
me .Olivia is as
well as can be ex
pected. we shall
have Dr McC -
in about 3 weeks
With love
ever so much to
all from us all
Your aff Mattie

Plumb
Plumb
Throning
