Harriet writes this letter to her sister, Emily, from Canton. She begins by responding to the news from home, including Frank's ill health and Sarah's move to a new place. While discussing other news of people from home, she describes how Miss Hardenbrook was present at a Soldiers Reunion. Harriet is enclosing a picture of Henry and herself, as a way to show her family that they are well.

Nov 10th '70.
My own dear Em,
It seems so nice
to find a letter from [u]Em[/u] when
we open our envelope from home
it was so many months that we
missed them. I am sure it must
seem good to lay aside your
glasses I hope before this you are
able to dispense with them
entirely. We are so sorry to hear that
Frank is so poorly I wanted to
write to him but as Henry is writing
perhaps I will let it go till next time.
It seems [u]so long[/u] since we have
had a line from him. We hoped
to hear from Sarah by this mail
but I suppose she had hardly got
settled in her new place. I would
write to her but it is late & Henry is
so much opposed to my sitting up to
write that I will not do it this time.
I always feel that it is a shame to
put off writing the home letters until
the very last when I know you
are the ones who care most for us & for
hearing from us but I suppose it is
because I feel that I can write
more hastily as I know that you will
"Pass all imperfections by." Mrs McChesney
was saying to-day that she always
wrote her home letter first of all. The
Marcellus' who have been living with
the McChesney moved away a few
days since to a house about half a
mile away. They were not very congenial
& it will be more pleasant so. Mrs
McChesney is a [u]very nice[/u] person she
makes me think some of you & some
of Matt. Last week we had a visit
from Dr Dean a Baptist missionary at
Bankok & his daughter Fannie and enjoyed
it so much. They came up to Hongkong
to meet Mrs Dean who has been home
on a visit & came out in the steamer
Last eve I had a note from Mrs
Dean saying that Fannie is to be married
in a few days to Rev Mr Goddard a
missionary from Ningpo and asking
if it would be convenient for us to have
them come up her to have the
ceremony performed as there are so
many formalities requisite in Hongkong
an English colony which are not
necessary here. Of course we are
[u]delighted[/u] to have them come a wedding
is quite a novelty in Canton.
Did I write you that we were disappointed
in not having the visit we expected from
Dr Adams & his daughters. They heard
so many rumors about Canton
that they were afraid to venture.
Dr Adams & Dr Dean are just two
of the [u]dearest old gentlemen[/u]. Henry
laughs at me a little for falling in love
with them. Dr Dean is 63 and it
seemed a [u]little[/u] like seeing [u]Father[/u].
He called me Hattie & kissed me
good-night & twice when he went
away. Perhaps this looks foolish put on
paper but it is true. Tell Father
that the Mr Crossette he mentioned
came out by the last steamer but
as they were going to the North of
China went to Shanghai instead
of Hongkong. The Synod of China
met & [--form--] organized. None of
the Canton Presbytery ^[were there "& as regards the] reason why"
on account of travelling expenses
Rev Mr & Mrs Wynkoop passed
through here a short time since
on their way to India to visit
their missionary son with whom
they expect to spend nearly two
years Is'nt he a fortunate mortal.
If you see the Presbyterian
& read the letters from India
signed TSW that is the man.
His mother thinks he is a wonderful
son & doubtless he is his letters are
certainly very interesting. How
does Clara get on with her school
I imagine she must get very tired
sometimes of so many little folks.
Tell Mary I am glad she had a
nice trip to Mansfield & saw the
Hamshers & [u]Dr Allen[/u]. I was going to write
to Mr & Mrs H & Dr & Mrs A on the 1st of Nov the
anniversary of the day when I parted from
them in New York but Dr Dean & Fannie
came in the evening & I did not get it done.
I have just answered Mr Bonar's letter by
this mail. I am [u]so much obliged[/u] to her
for sending me the information about
Miss Buchan & Miss Hardenbrook.
I have [u]so wanted[/u] to know someting
of Miss H. It was very nice that she
was in Ashland at the time of the Soldiers
Reunion. Indeed I would have enjoyed
seeing Uncle Sam's Boys but I suppose
they were dressed in citizens clothes & they
would'nt look quite as they used to.
When you write to Sarah give her
my love & tell her we will write to
her by next mail. How much
Mother will enjoy her visit to
Columbus. Do you ever hear any
thing of Aunt Mary or Coz Charlie.
Give my love to all inquiring
friends if there are any And

to get married.
