Canton May 20th 1872
My dear sister Clara -
Hattie and I have
been away all day visiting one
of the villages and now are
sitting down at our writing
desks to let Clara know that
we have thought of her. I
wish you Every blessing which
it is lest you should Enjoy
during the new year of your
Earthly life on which you this
day Enter. It is a matter of
great thankfulness that so far
as we know the lives of all
the members of the family have
been spared through all the troubles
through which at home you have
passed. We shall no doubt sometime

see how all was for the best.
From the last letters we are
glad to know that all are in
the Enjoyment of a good degree
of health. We were very glad
indeed to get the pictures of
father and mother. They both
look somewhat older than when
I said good bye to you all
6 years ago but still very
natural. Mother's face looks
a little fuller than it used
to. I presume this is in
part accounted for by her set
of teeth which she did not
have when I came away.
Father's hair + beard whiter
than they used to be otherwise
he looks much the same. I
cherish strong hopes of seeing both
again but this we cannot know.

In our letters which went by
last mail we told you we were
starting for a trip into the
country. We had a very nice
time and were gone 10
days. Mrs Happer who has
been in very poor health for a
long time seemed to get along
very well and be improving
until the last day when she
had head ache and the day
after getting home was attacked
with something like dysentery.
she seems rather better to day
and I hope will be up again
soon. But she is frail and
I greatly fear will not Endure
this climate a great while. I
forgot to say before that Dr
Happer seemed quite pleased to
get father's and mother's pictures.

I wonder if we Ever thought to
tell you that Weston Flint who
used to teach the Academy in
Seville is out here in China.
He is Consul at Hankou which
is way up the Yang Tse Kiang
river from Shanghai. I got a
letter from him a day or two
ago in reply to one which
I had written to him. He says
he thinks of China during
the coming Autumn and
in that case will come and
see us. It will seem refreshing
to meet with some one who
has lived in Seville. you must
seem quite near to Cleveland now
that you can go there as I suppose
in two hours. But I must stop
which I do with much love and a
birth-day Kiss O Your Aff Bro
Henry
