Canton June 5th 1880
Dear Em
The mail that reached us
Wednesday brought letters from Father
and you and Clara all of which
I was very glad to get and read
with much interest. Your letter
was dated April 6th just the end
of your spring vacation. I am
glad you are so near home that
you can get there frequently. It
is now getting near the time for
your long summer vacation and
I shall soon think of you as all
at the "home on the hill." I was
very glad too to get the letter written
by Mrs Sarah Mason to Mother giving
[--newns--] news about the Medway people
I wonder if I ever sent my thanks
for Cousin Toa's letter which I also
enjoyed very much. I can imagine
how sorry you will be when Mr
Cather leave Seville. You refer to
the school building. It is going on
nicely. I presume they are laying the

second floor to day. The walls were
up to the second floor when I was
down there yesterday and they
go to work and lay the floor just
as soon as they get the walls high
enough. It is very pretty on the outside
I think and is being built very sub-
stantially I guess I mentioned before
that it will be three stones high and
will accomodate about 100 pupils.
I send in this letter another
sermon as you wrote you were
glad to get the other one and this
will account for my not being
able to write you a very long letter
this time. We are all well
at our house. Willie has got
over the little trouble he had with
his last tooth and seems to be
enjoying life. A day or two ago
when Bella was down in the
Kitchen he made his appearance
having come down from the room up
stairs with his Mother's "meeting" hat
on. He presented himself before her
without a smile and when she said

Why you have got my hat on he
burst out in a loud laugh as though
he thought it was a good joke as
he undoubtedly did. He is getting
to be quite a boy. We have been
having a great deal of wet weather
lately and quite hot. We can
hardly get sunny weather enough
to dry our clothes and keep them
from moulding. I presume Hattie
will write to you in regard to
Mattie. She has had quite a hard time
of it the past week. Just now a note
has come in saying that she is
feeling better to day. I hope she will
get over it soon. Dr Kerr said that
she was very bilious.
I have not much news
to write. Nothing stirring is going
on here. Last night there was
a concert given by a gentleman and
his wife who are travelling and
giving concerts. I presume the
music was good but we did
not go. The tickets were rather
expensive $2.00 each.

It is communion in the church
here to-morrow that is in the church
that is under Dr Happers charge.
I do not know yet how many are
to be admitted. I believe there are
some. We are still working away
at the colloquial translation of
the New Testament. Dr Happer has
got 1st & 2d Corinthians translated.
Mr Henry has finished the Epistle to
the Galatians and I have finished
the Epistle of James. One of your
letters made some reference to Josie
Kerr. I do not think Mrs Kerr
is going home. Josie has I believe
already gone to Cannonsburg and
if he is settled there I do not
see as there will be any occasion
for her going home. I believe the
letters they get from home now are
quite satisfactory. I will not have
time to write any more as I must write
a few lines to a Mr Riopel who says
he was once at Hayesville. He has been at
Honduras & writes in reference to coming to China.
Possibly you may have known of him at Hayesville
but I presume not. With love from us all
Your Aff Bro, Henry.
