Canton March 20th 1880
My dear Sister Clara
I wrote to Em last mail
and am going to write to you now. I
am not so good as the girls who write
to several of you if not all by one mail
Usually if I get one letter written I
think I have done very well. This
week I have to write a sermon and
so of course am quite busy to day (Satur-
day) I have got just about as far
along as I usually get by Saturday
morning. You may possibly be
interested to know that I am writing
on the verse whose last clause
is "And so shall we be ever with
the Lord." May be if I get time I
will copy it and send it to you when
it is done. I got letters by the last
mail from Mother & Edward and the girls
read me your letter to them. Mothers
letter gives some account of Dr Ides'
death and I also saw some account
of it in the paper I think it was
the New York Observer. It was a long and
useful life. I was present at the exercises
when a colleague was installed over the
church. If I remember aright Dr Ide
had then been preaching to the church
50 years.
Edward says he is making
25 planters this winter. I should think
this would keep him quite busy. I hope
he will succeed in getting it into some
large establishment. He tells me about
Lynn Caighey[--s--] getting his face so burned
with powder. I guess he will hardly
go to pouring powder out of a horn
on the fire again. Powder & fire together
are rather dangerous for boys to say
nothing of older people. But there never
was a boy that did'nt like to get holdW
of powder notwithstanding. I remember
how Edward & I used to like to get it
and fire it off in little [--Elder--] Elder
cannons with a slow match.
Edward speaks of wind & rain. We
have not had wood for our streets
are solid granite but we had rain
enough during the month of February
It rained every day but two or three.
It is beautiful weather now however.
I expect to get away for a country trip
in about 3 weeks. I have got a new
station since I wrote last at Kong-
Mun which is about 6 miles from
San Ui. One of my Los Angeles boys
Mo Hing is to be the native assistant
there. The native preacher who was
at Sacramento while I was there has
come back and I hope to get a
place rented for him somewhere,
probably down towards the sea coast
in a district from which a good
many go to California.
The last mail brought us
word that two new missionaries
Messes Fuller & White from the
Union Theo Seminary have just
been appointed for Canton so that
we shall have some more help
will feel as though we had quite
a strong mission. They both expect to
come out married so all together
there will be four new arrivals.
You will be glad to know
that we are just getting arrange-
ments for the new school house
under way. One contractor has
sent in his offer and two or
three more will [--be--] give their
bids in a day or two We
will then give it to one of them
and they will begin right away.
Mattie has not been so well
quite for the last week or so
but I imagine the weather has
had a good deal to do with it.
I have a nice boys school this
year not so many on the roll
as last year but much more
regular in attendance. Bella has
one of the girls day schools which
is near here.
Willie is still strong and
well. His hair is beginning to get
darker. I presume will be eventually
be as dark as mine. Now goodbye
