Canton Nov 11th 1879
My dear Mother
It was too bad that
I did not get a home letter
written by the last mail I
was going into the country the
next morning and was to
start at 3-o-clock in the
morning. I intended to write
in the evening but something I
forget now what interrupted,
and I did not get it done.
I presume you got all neces-
sary news from the girls. I
went with Mr Henry for a trip
of Eleven days to some market
villages where I used to go
before I went home. Mr Henry
has charge of the work in
that region now but it was
a great pleasure to visit & see
the localities and people again
We were at market places
[--Every--] 9 of the Eleven days &
one other day at a large
city so that we had good
opportunities for preaching and
selling books 10 of the eleven
days Each of us preaching
from 2 to 4 times each
day. We both enjoyed our trip
had good weather and got
back looking quite robust.
I am glad that Em
is so well pleased with her
place. I hope she will have
health and strength for her
work and do much good.
You spoke about father's and
Mr Cranes's deafness. It made
me think of what I saw in
the paper not long ago. There
was a notice of an invention
by which deaf people could hear
through the mouth. Taking one
end of the instrument in
the mouth on the same principle
as you can hear a watch
tick in the mouth. Such an
invention, if it is a success,
would be [--g--] a great blessing to
deaf people. I am glad
that Sarah feels so much better
I do hope she will not have
so hard a time as she had
last year. You must have
enjoyed Dr Taylor's visit very
much. He seems to be a first
rate man to be at the head of
a college. By the last mail Dr
Happer's folks learned of his being
safely settled in Wooster. I pre-
sume you will have seen
him long before this reaches you.
He seemed to be pleased with
the place.
And now in regard
to ourselves. We are all very well
have got through the summer
nicely and now have nice cool
almost cold weather. Willie spends
a considerable portion of his
waking hours in the yard back
of the house playing with Ashing
a Chinese boy a few months older
than he is. They are great friends &
seem to have fine times together.
Willie is now well and strong
and getting along nicely. He al-
ways goes to Chinese prayers
in the Chinese school morning &
evening. He would'nt miss of it
for anything but he does not
yet quite understand that he
ought to keep still. Bella says
I must tell you that he is
a very good [u] American [/u], that when
he cried she has no difficulty
in quieting him by telling
him that she will take him
to see the [u] American [/u] flag. The
Consulate has been recently
moved so that the flag is in
plain sight from the front
verandah. I enclose a

哈珀医生的家人得知他安全地定居在伍斯特。
