Title

Section of Letter from Hattie

Subject

Visitors, Foreign; Morphine; Pain; Sabbath

Description

At the beginning of this letter, Harriet shares that while she was walking with Mr. Eitel they were called 'foreign devils' which is not as common as it used to be. She then goes on to write about her "Hypodermic man" in China who taught her about injecting medicine into the body via syringe. She had not thought about it until Henry told her about injecting morphine for pain which the man also taught her. She mentions that they acquired a stereoscope which they have been showing to visitors.

It seemed to create quite a sensation
when we went in I suppose they
are not accustomed to seeing ladies
there. The other day as I was
going along one of the streets with
Mr Eitel some one shouted after us
"fan qui" foreign devils. It used to be
quite common in Canton to call
foreigners by that epithet but is not
often heard now. It seems so strange
to walk along the narrow streets some
of them not much over a yard wide
It seems almost like being in a house
+ walking along a narrow hall
the more so as some of the streets
are covered. The Chinese are very
expert in making paper flowers
I saw beautiful large bouquets a
foot high for 18 cts. I wish I could
send some home, They imitate
dahlias in every variety of size +
color most perfectly.
I wonder if the girls will remember
anything about my "Hypadermic man"
as they used to call him that I met
on the cars when I was coming
form the east who told me
about injecting medicine into the

system with a syringe. + gave me
directions + advised me to get a
syringe and go to practicing .
I remember they had some foun at
my expense + that of the "Hypadermic
man" . I thought no more of it
until I reached China + Henry
very soon told me of a wonderful
way of relieving pain by injecting
morphine with a Hypadermic syringe,
the very same thing that that man had
told me about. I would be glad
now if I had followed his advice
and provided myself with a syringe
You must tell Cyrus I am aware that I
am changing the subject very
abruptly but my eyes happened
just now to light on the stereoscope
that we have taken so much pleasure
looking at the views I brought +
it is quite a treat to our visitors.
The English missionaries here have
very faint ideas of the grandeur
of America ,they seem surprised
that we have such fine scenery
in the United States. Henry's organ
is a very good one, but the climate

turns the keys yellow so soon that it
makes it look old. I played on it first
the anthem "When the worn spirit seeks
repose" and sometime I wish the choir
would sing it for me. I wanted to
sing it the last Sabbath morning I was
at home but we did not get to the
church in time. You must tell me
about SS Class when you write
I hope we will soon get letters from
home, only think it has been two
months since I have heard
from home but of course I could
not expect one You must give
my love to all my dear friends
sometime I will try + write
some letters but I foresee that
my time will be fully occupied
I suppose by the time you get this Mattie
will be at home from Ashland. I
hope she has had a pleasant term.
I wish some of you would tell Mrs
Shaw that I meant to stop + see
her the morning I came away but you
know it was impossible I have felt
very badly that it was so. And
now I will say good-night + ever
so much love to all the dear ones
Your aff daughter

我希望你们中的一些人会告诉夫人

她在我离开的那天早上,但你
我知道这是不可能的
非常糟糕的是它是如此。和
现在我要说晚安
我向所有亲爱的人发送如此多的爱
