[Note: +c transcribed as etc]

Leaving "Tsang Sha" we come up the river
about a mile to "Kokefau" the location
of the O S Pres Mission USA. There is here
a large hospital and directly in
front Dr Kerr has nearly finished his large
and comfortable dwelling house + on a
line with his this side is the double house
built by Mr Preston + Folsom. We shall
probably occupy Mr Folsom's side, as soon
as Dr Kerr moves out into his new house.
[--D--] In the rear of these buildings are the Chapel
schoolhouse Training school etc etc.
Dr Kerr you already know so I will not
need to describe him only to say that he
bears acquaintance. He is a real good
man and a faithful missionary and
has been the means of doing a great deal
of good. I suppose there is no other mission
hospital in China nearly equal to his.
He is a real tease but seems to feel a
fatherly interest in me although I presume
he would not feel flattered to have me
apply that adjective. Mr + Mrs Preston
and "all the little Prestons" five of them
are as clever (American meaning) good natured
and happy a family as you could ask
to see. Mr Preson we have told you
reminds us of Coz Henry Mason every bit
as good natured. perhaps a little
taller but quite thick set. Mrs Preston
is a little taller with black hair + eyes
and dignified but not "prim" ----

She makes it her business to take good
care of Mr Preston + the children and
does it well . We go there more than
anywhere else and feel perfectly at
home with them. The children
Walter Mamrie Sophie Annie + Laura
are the nicest of children. ----
We expect soon to go down and
live in the house with them and I
am sure shall find it very pleasant.
The next mission house about half
way between there and here is a
double one owned by the English Wesleyan
One side now occupied by Mr John
Preston + family + the other by Mr
Parkes, + family. Mr Preston has
just returned from a visit of two
years at home after a stay of 11 years
here . He seems like a very pleasant
kind good man. I am sure we shall
think a great deal of him, and Mrs
Preston too we are not very well acquainted
with her yet as they have been in Hong kong
nearly all the time since they came back
on account of the sickness of one of their
children. They have three children
Nellie Willie + the baby. The other side
is occupied by Mr Parkes. They were
married about 2 years ago he coming
out three years in advance as the
Wesleyans all do. He is rather peculiar
quite funny but dont seem to have

much to do ^with any one work away in
his own way. Tell the girls that he
walks around as smart + spry as
Dan Shaw + makes us think of him
some in a good many ways. Mrs Parkes
is rather quiet we do not see very much
of her. She is very very fleshy I feel
sorry for her the hot weather we have
here is so hard for her. They have two
little girls Nellie + Annie. The next
Mission House the next building but one
to us is the London Mission occupied
by the Eitels and the Andersons. Mr Eitel
is a German was sent out by a German
Board but when he wanted to marry an
English lady here they object so he
left them and became connected with
the London Miss Soc. He works among
the Hakkas in the country and is
away from home a godo deal. Mrs Eitel
is a very delicate lady used to raise blood
before she came from England. Nevertheless
she has recently attempted to take the
charge of a boarding school of 14 girls.
Our dear Cynthia thought a great deal
of Mrs Eitel. She is very quiet and a
stranger would never dream of her posessing
the force that she has. Mr Eitel + I
have a discussion once in a while about
secession " etc etc. They have one little
girl Winnie have lost a little boy --
a little while before I came.

Mr Anderson + wife on this side are from
Scotland. They are Congregationalists +
if they had come from USA I should
guess that he was from Oberlin. [?He?] is
one of those who formerly believe "Union"
provided the giving up is all one side
and looks down from the pinnacle of
free thought + liberalism upon narrow
minded bigotry + superstitious prejudices
As an Englishman his opinion of
America + American institutions are not
very flattering + he expresses them with
the greatest freedom when with us. I think
a little information on the subjects would
modify his views in many respects but
I always feel as though we can afford to
wait patiently for it seems as sure that
the United States is going up the ladder
as that England is coming down and
"we shall see what we shall see"
Mr Anderson is a very tall man almost
as much difference between his height and
his wife's as there is between yours + Mother
She has always seemed so very young
to me + I was much surprised the other
day to learn that she is six years older
than I + five years older than he is.
From his looks + appearance I could
easily have believed him to be over
forty. The next missionary house
is occupied by Mr + Miss Noyes of the
O S Pres Mission from America. I will
leave all description of them to yourself

are as smart (美式意思) 脾气好

Walter Mamrie

Mission House
