Section of Unsigned Letter

Subject

Bible stories; Finance; Buildings

Description

This letter, most likely written by Harriet, describes a visit from Mr. Bainbridge, a Baptist, who explains the Biblical story of Job. The author believes Job's suffering would have been lessened had he known it was the will of God. Mr. and Mrs. Bainbridge are touring the missions of the world. The author's Board is in debt and cannot expand their buildings, but it is suspected that they will have the funds this year.

remarks a Mr Bainbridge
made who was here in Canton
with his wife + son for a week
They are Baptists + staid
at Dr Graves'. One evening
they were here to tea and
he led in family prayers.
read from the book of Job
+ made a few remarks
about it. He said that
first of all poor Job was in
such trouble + he felt that
although his trust in God's
goodness in wisdom was unshaken
+ that He ruled over + ordered
everything in general yet sometimes
incidentally he might forget
about a poor worm of the
dust . Then his friends
came + their theory was
that all suffering was
by way of punishment +
Job must have been a

sad sinner to get into
such deep trouble . Then
[?Elihn?] came with his theory
which was that all suffering
is for discipline .But God
answered the, and showed
that they were all wrong in
trying to explain the matter
and that he ordered all
things for his honor and
glory and for the good of
his children . I have
often thought if poor Job
had known at the time
why it all was it would
have doubtless been so
much easier for him
to bear his trouble --
Mr + Mrs Bainbridge are
making a tour around
the word especially to visit
the missionary stations.
They were both down in

the army + at Point of Rocks
but not while I was there.
She was from Cleveland
They expect to spend two
years in travel and are
seeing the missionary work
very faithfully. I imagine
they are gong to write a
book or books but do not
know . He knew Dr
Ellinwood very well .
I see our Board has
just had a legacy of
$ 25,000 from a lady
in Pittsburg . That will
nearly pay off half their
loss. Dr Ellinwood writes
that if either the debt of
$62,000 is paid or the
loss of $55,000 made
up that the desired
building at different stations

can be put up and that
the Canton building shall
be among the first. Now
that we have their sure
promise we do not mind
waiting at all we only feared
that opposing elements here
might represent or misrepresent
things in such a way that
they might forbid our building
at all. But now we are
"easy in our minds" - and as
Dr Lowrie once said "All
is well that ends well" --
Dr Ellinwood says he
feels as though we will have
the building this year.
I hope we may. We have
considerable money on
hand now for the purpose
but "Tell it not in Gath" -
We are anxious to put up
the building just right and
