Canton Dec 3 1879
My dear Mother
As I do not recollect
to whom I wrote last I am
going to send a few lines
to those from whom I received
letters. We found our
letters and papers lying on
the table when we [?arrived?]
[--from--] from our country trip
of which I wrote just now
In my letter to Edward.
It is very fine weather for
such trips at this season
of the year. I found when
we got back that Mr Henry
had been away for a week
and day after to morrow
he and Dr Kerr are thinking
of going again. I expect
there will be a good deal more
country work done than formerly.
Mr Henry likes it, Dr Kerr likes

it when he can get away from
the hospital which is but sel-
dom and I like it [--then--]
We shall be getting more stations
all the time. Baby made
a good deal of use of the
little primer you sent him
on the trip. He liked the
pictures and most every
day would bring it to
me to be taught the letters.
He can say all the letters
[--after--] in his way but does not
recognize many of them
when he sees them. He
knows O which is the
first letter children usually
learn I believe. One day
he brought his book and
kept turning the leaves as
though he was looking
for something. Finally he
found it. It was the

picture for Z on the
last page which stands
for Zechariah and it is
the picture of a boy who
did not want to go to
bed, but was crying with
his mouth wide open. When
Willie had found the picture
he straightened himself up
threw back his head and
opened his mouth as wide
as he could and stretched out both hands like the boy in the picture as much as
to say "Here he is". He
is a great strong boy now
and eats rice like a
Chinaman. While in the
country he liked to go ashore
and make long visits among
the Chinese. I hope he will
grow up to do them good
I presume the girls will
write to you about the
Dunlap's. They are on their
way home from Siam.

His health has failed entirely.
They are very sorry to leave
their work but he cannot
stay. He is quite weak has
some trouble with his heart.
Dr Kerr thinks there is a
chance of his recovery
at home. He told me
yesterday morning that he
thought he would get to
our house sometime. I hope
he will. He was at Wooster
commencement when Em
graduated and heard her
essay.
Miss Sara Anderson has
also decided to go home. Expects
to leave in Jan and go
by way of England. Now
must close. I am quite
busy today and to-morrow
as I have [--the--] to write the
paper for Conference which meets
to-morrow evening at Dr Happer's
[Continued written vertically]
My subject "[?Contributing?] by the Native Churches. Good bye for
this time We all send love to all Your aff Son Henry
