Title

Letter from Henry to Mary, July 13, 1878

Subject

Backache; Harvesting; Wheat; Wagons; Infants

Description

Henry writes to his sister Mary about how his father and Edward were both experiencing back pain, probably linked to the haying and harvesting. Henry suggests getting a machine to help with harvesting wheat to help the job become shorter. Mrs. Clarke has been coming to take care of the baby while Bella goes to school. The baby is fat and growing which is very pleasing to Henry. He thinks that the baby is strong enough to go overseas.

Sacramento July 13th
1878
My dear sister Mary
It was your turn
to have a letter last time
but I thought I would write
to all together. I have just
finished a letter to father in
reply to his good birth day
letter and now am going to
supplement that by a few
lines to you. I was real
sorry to hear that father and
Edward were both having so
much trouble with their backs.
It will make it very inconvenient
about the haying + harvesting. If
they get a machine for the wheat
I expect it will not be a very
long job . It was such a pity
that it got beaten down by the
rain. I was just looking at
a reaper in one of the shops
here this morning. It is an
immense thing. I think it must
be intended to be drawn by steam

power as there did not seem
to be any place to hitch horses
to it. It takes a [?swath?] 12
or 14 feet wide. The cutter
bar is right and the front and
the knives have a sickle edge
instead of a smooth edge. There
seemed to be an arrangement
behind for steering it. I would
like very much to see it
work. They have immense
threshing machines too that
go by stEamer. Just before
leaving Los Angeles I passed
on the railroad a place where
they were making two immense
long wagons - with [--a--] regular
roofs on and high enough
to stand up in. I could
not conjecture what they were
for and asked some one.
I was told they were for
laborers working in immense
ranches. One wagon is a
sleeping apartment and the

other is a large dining
room and kitchen. They
work awhile in one locality
and then more on taking
their little houses with them.
I guess I wrote last
week that we have been
having a little vacation. We
have since vacation been
getting along without Mrs
Clarke the lady who has
been teaching in the school.
We found near where we
live and old [--do--] negress
who comes + takes cary
of the baby evenings and so
Bella can go to the school.
It is somewhat larger than
it used to be at Los Angeles
We usually have between 30
and 40 present in an evening,
and 60 or 70 different ones
during the month.
We are all well
baby fat and flourishing as usual

He has got so if I do not
happen to notice him when I
get back in the afternoon from
the school house he bursts out
crying as though he thought
himself sadly neglected. He is
a very good boy about crying
however does'nt do it very
much -- will sit in his little
carriage in the porch or sit
on the floor and amuse
himself by the hour - does'nt
creep but manages to move
about a little. I put him
on my two knees and [--trop--]
trot him like riding horseback
He has got so he will balance
himself first rate. I holding
my hands a little ways from
him on each side to catch
him if he should lose his
balance. It is a great blessing
that he keeps so strong and
well. I do not think he will
have any trouble going over the
sea. Now good bye for this time
Ever so much love to all from
Your --Henry -
