Mattie is glad that her father could attend Edward's ordination. She tells her father that the last Sabbath was their Communion and briefly talks about those who were received in the Church. Recently, she received a letter from Dr. Happer that had information about the college, which apparently will be located in Canton. Dr. Happer also summarizes other aspects of the future college such as faculty, salaries, relationship to the mission, and leadership. Then, Martha tells her father about Henry's school building plans.

My dear Father
Only a few minutes
before the mail will leave
We hope so much that
you were able to attend
Edwards ordination. Our
home letters are expected
next Saturday. Last Sabbath
was our Communion in
the 2nd Church. 12 were received
Seven of these were girls
from the School five of
whom I think were baptized
in infancy. Dr Swans
cook and ours also the table
boy of Miss Lewis and Butlers
It seemed very nice for
them all to come together
Akai our boy a year ago
was one of those who stood
in criticism upon the errors
of church members but for
the past five or six months
has felt very much interes
ted. He will have much to
contend with but if his feet
are planted upon the rock
Christ he is safe. It is some-
thing we feel so thankful for
Achung our table boy have been
interested more or less ever
since he first heard the gospel
but has not yet decided the
all important question. There
were three from the hospital
{women} examined but it
was thought best for them to
wait longer. Our pastor has
been called by the church at
Lin Chau to become their
minister but this church
refuses to let him go so I sup
pose it will become a matter
for the Presbytery to settle. It
would seem hard to take him
from this church, do not know
what will be done. The last
mail brought a letter of 8 fools
cap pages or at least something
equal to it from Dr Happer
about the college. We all judge
from the letter that the location
is to be Canton although the Dr
was exceedingly careful not
to say so. He said be hoped no
one would think he had given
his influence against Canton.
That if the people wanted it
here the Chinese he would do all
in his power to have it put
here &c &c. The salary of the pro-
fessors not to exceed that of the
missionaries. The College
faculty not to be missionaries
that is not to have a vote in
Mission meeting or on the role
of the missionaries. The ruling
power to be the Board of
Trustees and the faculty of the
[?Just?]. That will make a sort
of limited monarchy of it as
the trustees will be too far
away to render very immedi
ate service. As far as the
human side goes, it would
seem as though under the
[u] proposed [/u] leadership things
might not move very straight
but one thing is sure the
Lord can choose his own
workers and I think there is no
doubt he will. Henry is busy
getting or trying to get ground
for a new School building for
his boys. Was down here yester
day about it. He seems very
well for a man who is on
the last year of his second
term of service. I think of
you as almost 83. Only one
day more. Hope you are getting
stronger day by day. I think of
you so much. The verse for
your birthday is very nice
