Martha tells her dear ones at home that last week they had their ministerial brethren with them. My dear Ones at Home
Your letters of last
mail are before me but
am afraid I shall not do
much at answering them
to day. We are well. The Dr
is going on day by day and
keeping pretty well. Miss Edna
Cole has been with us the
past week. This morning
she has gone over to [?Fati?]
and is coming back next
Saturday - will then be here
for a week or two. Last week
Thursday and Friday Pres. was
in session here and we
had our Ministerial brethren
with us - both Chinese and
foreign. Thurs. afternoon
Bishop Goodsell and wife

came up from Hongkong
and stayed with us 2 days.
We had also Dr Thomson
from Macao and Mr
Coleman is still her. This
Bisho[ is out visiting the sta
tion of the Methodist Church
in Fuchau Nanking Pekin
etc etc. A tremendous man
weighing over 300, and she
larger than I which is saying
all any one ought to say.
We were afraid for the
safety of our guest bed with
such weighty individuals
upon it but it did not colapse
much to our relief. He was
such a nice man - we enjoy
ed his visit very much.
The day before they left
a Mr Lockwood arrived
from India. He is a brother

in law of Mrs Henry Jessup
of Syria and that gives him
a pasport into all mission
circles. He is travelling about
leisurely - time seems in consid-
eration. To morrow he goes out
into the country to visit a line
of stations under the care of
the Germans and will be
back in about a week. Then
proposes a long boat trip in
another direction - making his
head quarters here. Yesterday
a little German Dr put in an
appearance but he will go
away to morrow. If we took the
guests we have and boarded
them by the day we should
accumulate quite a fortune
our additional expenses
for guests this year has
already been about 50.00 and

we are not through Feb yet
But I do not care half as
much for the money as I do
for the time and strength
it consumes. The house has
been full to overflowing the
whole time this year - old and
young, single and married.
Some ask if they may come
others just walk in upon us.
It makes me think of the
summer we had at home
I feel sometimes as though
I was in a hotel. But we are
the hotel of the mission
The result of never being [?alone?]
is objectionable in many ways.
We have no home life
The Dr and I are never alone
We cannot talk without
the danger of being overheard
even in our sleeping room

[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
[--by if he could have--] it finishes to day - our school
open to morrow
and work be-
gins. Can not
get up steam
to write any
letters. Do
not know what
the home
[--peo--] societies
will do with
me.
Your loving
sister
Mattie
