Canton China
June 29th /76.
My dear Henry
I wonder where this
letter will find you - In the
"home on the hill" I hope.
I have as yet heard nothing
from these travellers since
their leaving Beirut or rather
Port Said. I suppose Lucy has
told you all about wedding
[?No?] three which was perpetrated
about a week since. I was
only going to remark that when
I was at their reception party
at Mr Whiteheads he drew up his
chair and told me "as how he
loved you and Hattie" said he
was sure he would never forget
you in this world - said had it
not been for you both his first
3 years in Canton would have been

very unhappy as it was they were
very happy--- They are counting the
months now till they too say good
bye to us for a season. I saw
Mr Henry last eve. He told me
of his last trip to Sumin said he
stopped at a large place called
"Lun" - something I forget what
where they told him no foreigner
had ever been and he sold a
large quantity of books - remarked
perhaps it was not a very min-
isterial employment but he
thought he could accomplish
more than by preaching during
the two hours he had at his
disposal. He goes into shops
and stores wherever he can get
an opportunity sells something
I suppose he has told you
of the wife of the Assistant at
Sumin being baptized - says
when you come back he hoped
there can be a church organized
He will make a grand worker
if he is not hindered in any way
You could not have left your

field with any one more thorough
ly interested in it than he--
I wish we had a host of just
such spirits on the ground --
Dr Happer's Sin Shang the one
who took such a prominent part
at the 30th Anaversary of [--this--] his
stay in China was arrested when
on his way to Dr Happer's last
Saturday morning and thrown into
prison - where he is now awaiting
trial for what I do not know.
The Dr nor none of his family
not even Johnnie have said a
word about it but our teachers let
it out - As near as we can find
out the matter is about this. It seems
the interpreter at the
American Consulate opened a
gambling saloon just against our
chapel somewhere and Dr Happer
finding it out set this Sin Shang
to looking into the matter. It is
supposed by our teachers that the
interpreter has found this out and
under some pretense has pro-
cured his arrest what the accusation
[--th--] is they do not know. There has
been a letter written in Chinese
purporting to come from Dr Happer
asking for the release of 3 men now

in prison put into the hands of
our Consul but the letter is not
the work either of Dr Happer or his
teacher and he does not even know
these men by sight -- The Dr Happer
asked to be allowed to attend the
trial which was to have occurred
yestardy but was refused after-
wards gained permission for
Mr Preston to be present. Mr Preston
waited for the Consul until
five oclock when he received a
note from him saying the
judge could not attend to the
case that day - so neither went to
the Ya hum. What was the fact
in the case?-- A relative of Tsui
SinShang's being a soldier gained
admission to the Ya hum it being
unknown he had any personal
interest in the trial and he reports
that the judge and his attendants
went into the Court room at
two oclock and waited until 5
expecting the foreigners and won-
dering why they did not come.
Then the prisoner was remanded
to prison to await trial at some
future time when no one knows
His Chinese friends are much
afraid he will live but a short
time the weather is so warm and
his health is so poor. Some of his

[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
friends went to the prison the other day to call oh him
but the keeper told
them they could only
be admitted upon
the payment of
$100 which of course
prevented their
seeing him. I do
feel so sorry for him
the fact of his
being connected
with foreigners make
it much worse
for him these
miserable keepers
of the prison think
he has access to
money and they are
determined to get
hold of it. Your
old man comes around
his [?pile?] of once in a while with
manuscript looing as
as pleased and happy as in days of youre
Good night Your loving sister Mattie
