My dear Hattie
To morrow the
mail leaves and whatever
is sent from this home
must be written to night
Dr Niles has a reading
with her medical class
Tues. and Friday evening
so she will be soon
going out. We have had
very very hot weather for
the past five weeks. The
past three days have been
a little more so

People are impressed with the
idea that this is a locality
in the torrid zone. The Hubrig
family are all improved to
the extent of planning to
go to Hongkong to morrow
They have had such a
hard time. I do pity them
especially Mrs Hubrig. She
is so young only 26 Dr Niles
thinks and has had six children
The young lady who came
out to marry the gentleman
who did just before she
reached here is still with
them do not know when she
expects to go back to Germany
Mr Eitler's little baby is ill
with fever. They of course feel
very anxious about it. Mrs
E- has had a bad experience
too. They all went to the country

leaving Miss Baird in the
house, on Shamin. While
they were gone her watch was
taken. She had lost the key
to the drawer a few works
before. One day her cook came
and wanted to go up stairs
did so in spite of Miss Bairds
cook who was in charge.
They suspect him as having
been the thief and he is now
in prison. She has not been
able to get a cook and through
all this dreadful weather
has been getting along as best
she could. I do like them
both so much. They are put
ting up a house in the country
and expect to spend a great
deal of time there and little
here. And one more sick one
Mrs Hargreaves who is so anxious

for the time to come when
she can go home. They leave
in December and go by way
of Australia. Their Board wrote
him such a nice letter grant
ing permission for him to
go that way, also offering to pay
his expenses {additional}. Mr
Bone goes up to Shamin after
they leave. It seems as if they
would like living there. Have
I told you of the society which
has been recently found
here. The ground work is the
outdoor staff of the Customs
and they have had two meetings
The first at Mr Pierce's the
second at our house. Mr Pierce
is Pres. Mr Williams Vice Pres.
Mr McCloy and young Hartivele
Secretaries Mrs Williams Treas.
The society is styled "The
mutual improvement Society of Canton"
are to have meetings every two
weeks to be held mostly in the houses

of the missionaries. They are to have lectures, papers &c
written by I know not whom and amusements. The
ladies are to furnish
music, and "other
things" but they are
fortunately to have
no refreshments. Dr
Kerr is on the temper
ance Committee
Mr & Mrs Williams
are devoted Christians
and trying to do
what they can for
these men. They say
the morals of the
Canton staff are worse
that those at any
post where they have
been. It must be a
great trial to them to
live amid such sur
roundings. Paper is
full. Good night
Your aff sister
Martha
