Henry writes to his mother on his 38th birthday. A case of small pox was found in the school and it was recommended that the scholars leave the school. He writes from a boat near Canton and has been away for the last fifteen days. They were all vaccinated before leaving Canton. While on the boat, they stopped where Mr. McChesney was killed and Henry preached there. The boat excursion cost $2.10 a day unless the waters were really bad, then it was a little more.

April 24th 1874
My dear Mother
You will see by the
date of this that it is my
38th birth day. It makes me
seem as though I was getting
quite old. I presume Matt
will tell you know how it
happens that we are away
from Canton. There was a
case of small pox or rather
varioloid in the school and the
doctor[--s--] recommended that
the scholars be sent home for
a month. As people were not
specially anxious to see us
under these circumstances we
got a large boat and have been
away in the country for 15 days.
We shall be back to Canton now
in the course of 4 or 5 hours
We have had a very pleasant
trip and have all been quite
well. We were vacinated before
we left Canton but it did not
take in the case of any us so
that I suppose we were none
of us liable to take it.
This morning we
passed by the place where Mr
McChesney was killed, and stopped
for an hour or so. We had a
large boat ^to-day and anchored just
where I anchored on that fatal
night. A large crowd of people
gather on the short and I
preached to them from the
very spot where Mr McChesney
was killed and had very
good attention. The country
seems very quite Everywhere
now just as it did before
the Tientsin massacre. That
affair stirred up such an
Excitement that it seemed to take
some time to get over it. We
have been treated very civilly
Everywhere.
Matt + Luc thought
it was a new Experience to
live so long without bread
but travelling up among the
mountains as we did so
helps one's appetite that it
does'nt make so much difference
what they got to Eat. Matt
don't like rice very well. We
can get chickens and Eggs and
pork most Every where. You would
be astonished to see how I can
make the rice disappear. I am
a regular Chinaman in that
respect.
Our boat is a good large
one with two rooms and another
small one where the girls slept
It takes 8 men to manage it
We got the whole affair for $2.10
a day Except 2 or 3 days of the
upper End of the journey where
the water was more swift and
consequently the work harder we
had to pay a little more. We
feel quite anxious to get back
and hear whether any more of
the school girls were sick
We arranged before we went
away to have the School house
whitewashed and a part of
the floors repainted.
I have had very
good opportunities of preaching
and distributing books during the
trip and hope some good has
been done. I do not know whether
you can read this very well. The
boat shakes so with the rowing that I
can't write very well. With very much love to all
