I trimmed this off a little because it just
barely ran over weight. C.
Canton Jan 3d 1882
Dear Emily or Em (as you
like it) I have just finished
a letter to Sarah and
will write also to you
to send best New Year's
wishes to the family at
home. The last letter I
got was from Mary [--what--]
which was waiting our
return from the country. She
seemed to think it was
near her turn to receive
a letter . I presume she
has got it before this but
I am not quite sure. I
know that mail before last I

wrote to Mother + Edward +
last mail I think to Mattie.
So I am writing to [?thee?]
next in order of ages.
I asked Willie what I
should tell grandpa about
his new knife and he said
"Tso tse ku" which
means Thank him.
Willie is getting to understand
nearly all that we say
in English and begins to
say some words himself
Richard Varnum is just be-
ginning to walk and
say a few words. This
week I am writing a
Sermon on the text given

by the Evangelical Alliance
for Jan 8th "The night is
far spent, the day is at
hand." I have not written
much yet but expect to
do more as the days go on.
Dr Gulick the Agent of the
American Bible Society for
China was here last Sabbath
and preached an excellent
sermon on the power of
concerted prayer. Showing
how the establishment and
progress of Missions had
been very much in im-
mediate connection with
despite arrangements for

concerted prayer.
The weather here
is beautiful now. I suppose
it would seem strange to
you to-day to be sitting
without a fire and writing
with perfect comfort.
Well I am under the
necessity of going to my
chapel now as I have
a meeting at three-o-clock
and my chair has
arrived so I will say
good bye for this time.
Much love from us all
to you and the other members
of the family also
Your Aff Bro
- Henry --
