Title

Letter from Henry to Mary, August 11, 1882

Subject

Teachers; Visitors, Foreign; Chapel; Budget; Young adults in missionary work; Children of missionaries; Health

Description

Henry is glad that Mary likes teaching and compares her experience to his. Mr. White and Dr. Thomson have not been able to rent a house in Lin Chau because the magistrate does not allow foreigners to rent houses either to live or have a chapel. Henry is happy to hear that a lot of the seminary students would like to be foreign missionaries, so he hopes that the Board has enough funds for them. He concludes by writing about his sons and their health.

Canton Aug 11th 1882
Dear Mary -
The little girl that used
to go to school and study - then
grew up and made pan-cakes -
and has now developed into a
full grown school-teacher. I am
glad you like teaching. Sarah
says that you do and I suppose
she knows. I was glad to get
a letter from her by the last mail.
I did not like teaching when
I began. There are those at home
who will tell you that. But
then I did not have a horse
and carriage to ride home
every night. That might
have made some difference
I am very glad you do like
it and hope you will
always have the good fortune
to have pleasant schools when
you teach, for the teaching itself

is pleasant I always thought.
I suppose you are all at
home during the summer
months and are having I doubt
not a nice time. Sarah spoke
of having rides with the horses.
I am glad Edward has such
a good team. I should like
to see the horse that was
a little colt when I was at home
Since writing the above
I have been to meeting +
returned. Next Sabbath is
Dr Happer's communion and
he always has a meeting
for the school children on
Friday. This is the meeting
that I have just attended
Mr White gave them a talk.
I rather think it was his
first public address. He got
along very well. I think he

will be understood. He and
Dr Thomson have not suc-
ceeded in getting a place at
Lin-Chau so I expect we
shall have them in Canton
for awhile yet. The magistrate
in Lin Chau will not let
any one rent a house for
a chapel or a place for a
missionary to live. We have
a small chapel already.
Mr Fulton has been there
[--th--] ever since the 1st of April
living in a boat. He expects
to return Canton before long.
I am glad to learn from
the papers that there are so
many of the Seminary Students
of last year who wish to
go as foreign missionaries.
I hope the Board will have

the funds to send them. Dr
Ellinwood writes that the con-
tributions from the churches
last year was less than it
has been any year since
the re-union. The Amount
was made out by private
contributions and legacies.
I was sorry to
hear that Mattie was not
feeling better but I hope before
this time she will be much
improved. The children are
both well and their parents in
usual health. I have seen some-
times little articles with such a
heading as this "Learn to say No"
I think if you heard little
Richard Varnum sometimes you
would think he had already learned
the lesson. He says No occasionally
with a good deal of Emphasis. He is a
very good little boy however. Now I must
close Much love from all Your aff Bro
-Henry -

Lin-Chau
