Description

This seems to be a section of a letter written by Martha. Mrs. Kuder died rather suddenly, so the writer remembers that when she first started teaching Mrs. Kuder was always around. Then, the author describes an episode of a woman who was found nearly dead and was taken into the chapel and then to the hospital, where she was assisted by medical students. Some missionaries praised Henry's preaching and Miss Weisner thinks that he should be appointed as pastor. Miss Sophia will come to China and Mrs. Henry will help her transition to this new culture. They had a conference recently, where the Consul-deputy commissioner of customs was present. The writer mentions that there has been trouble with some missionaries that leased some land from a man who is in prison.

but the weather is cooler and
it will not be so hard for
the Drs. It has been a long
weary summer. I suppose there
will still be hot weather but
the nights will be cool. You
write of the Ohio Church Choir Co.
It does seem strange that
the [?Porter?] family are out on
such a tour. Is it good work for
[?Medivin?]? - Should think it would
make him nervous. Wish Mr
Notestine was stronger but it
he will be careful perhaps he
can get on though we fear for
him. Your letters were the
bearers of sad news indeed.
I can not realize that Mrs
Kuder is gone. What an awful
shock to [--March--] Marcia and
indeed all of them. [?How?] she
toiled for them all during her
lifetime and how suddenly

she was taken. How many of
our friends are safe at home
It must have been a com
fort for them to have had
you with them. We know how
the heartaches when loved ones
are taken I scarcely see how
Clara was able to control her
feelings so she could play at
the funeral The girls would be
so glad for all that you could
do for them - I remember our visit
there so well Marcia got dinner
and Mrs Kuder said she might
get just what she wanted to.
Mr Kuder will be so lonely
It was so nice Father could go
up and see them -
Do give them my warmest
sympathy. I remember how kind
Mrs Kuder was to me the first
summer I taught school - how
I used to follow her about
go out with her when she milked

and how many good laughs we
had together. If we should live
to come home again how
changed everything would be
Each decade makes them more
numerous. But it is a joy to think
how many are there to welcome
us when our turn shall come
How surprised Mrs Kuder
must have been to have
found herself in heaven.
The Dr says she could not
have realized anything she
went in the [?twinkling] of an
eye. So the one who goes
this must be a blessing
but it is such a shock to
those that remain.
The other day the Dr was
resting and a note came
down form the other end saying
Will some one sign this
[illegible] so I may know the men
have carried this dying woman

down to the hospital. Found
her on the street and did not know
what else to do with her - signed
Mary Fulton. I went out and found
a most wretched being lying on an
old board - the body covered with
rags and dirt. The coolies were
most impatient to get rid of their
burden and would hardly stay
until she could be carried into the
chapel. I had clean bed boards taken
out of the hospital for her to be put
on and closed the blinds of the
chapel so the sun should not
disturb her. She looked at me so
wonderingly. Called the medical
students and told them to bring her
some [illegible]. She was too sick to
be talked to. But when I came in
it seemed as though every bit of strength
had gone out of me. Oh the dread-
ful sights [illegible] everybody of our
lives. Sometimes it does seems as if
we could scarcely endure it.
How little I know of this hospital
until I came into it. Must stop -
was so sorry Clara did not leave that
lovely trip - perhaps it will come in
the future.

[Note: Missing a page?]
it seems he went to the coun-
try without sending McCloy
word. The result was that
Henry without a moments warn
ing had to go into the pulpit
and give them a sermon. He
took his "[?Tekel?]" and preached
so well. Miss Wisner who
has never heard him before
said after the service "My cant
Mr Noyes preach" - Mr Wisner
suggested they appoint him
pastor. I am rather glad it
came so for now he will not
have to prepare a discourse.
Miss Lewis is looking for
Miss Butler this week although
Miss B. has not written any thing
about coming. Miss Sophia
may be on the next steamer
from San Francisco. Mrs Henry
says she means to take her
for a little while at first

so she will not feel the shock
of the change so much. It is so
still over the other side - the
parlor is not lighted at night
nor used at all scarcely that we
all fear she will get lonely. Mrs
Graves says it does not seem like
the same place since Hattie
went away and I came over
here. If Miss Butler were only
better I know it would seem
different. Miss Lewis is expecting
to go to California next year
leave when school closes and
come back before it opens again
so if Hattie comes back ^that way she will
probably have her for company.
Miss Whiden may return but it
is still and undecided question
Well the conference is a thing
of the past. Mrs Swan was taken
with fever the day she began
to prepare for it so it ended
in Dr Swan and I looking after

it. It really cost me more effort
than our own did. This is the
third conference I have had to
do with since my arrival 18
months ago so I presume we will
not have our turn again right
away. There were about 40 present
the Consul-deputy Commissioner
of Customs and wife - Dr & Mrs
Wales - Mr & Mrs Williams and
Mr Nye beside the missionaries
Henry is to have the next
paper. There has been trouble
again at Hai Nan and Mrs Gillman
and Child are again in Macao
The missionaries are trying to
take possession of the land they
have leased and it does not
suit the power that be to
allow them to do it But they have
three pretty determined men there
who will not give up very easily
The man who leased them
the ground is in prison and
there has been every endeavor

to arrest the two private teachers
of the Missionaries But I hear
this morning they have reached
Macao in safety. Dr McCandliss
says it is a great relief now that
Mrs G and these teachers are gone -
Dr Niles and Miss Baird are
now in the country will probab-
ly be back in another week -
Mr[?s?] Fulton has gone again
with a native preacher and
Dr as helpers. Dr Fulton is down
with Asthma. She has charge of
[?9?] dispensaries but they will have
to miss attention this week. It
is not safe for her to open a
great deal of work- as she is not
strong. Dr Thomson and family
come up this week to go into
the country for 3 or 4 weeks- Will
go down to Yeung Kong I suppose
Oscar has been quite ill but
is now better. The hospital is
full of patients and there are
hosts of operations to be done

Notestine
