Canton [?April 1st?]
My dear Mary -
Hattie wrote you
a birth day letter March
30th and I send one Apr
1st so you can strike the
average and obtain March
31st. We that is Miss Lewis
and myself went to Hong
Kong Monday eve - with
Hattie and Miss Butler.
The Dr could not leave
as Dr Wales had gone down
to see his wife off to Eng
land - so Dr Kerr has his
practice on Shamin.
But he will return by
the steamer to night and

we will not be sorry. The
Dr has not been well for
nearly three weeks but is
hard at work. There is no
rest for him in Canton.
This morning he is on
Shamin seeing patients
then he goes to the Custom
house to see Miss Butlers
boxes off to New York .
by sailing ship. I came
off the str - this morning
bringing a guest of the
Church Mission from India
and found upon arrival
the Dr had taken in one
of the same Mission in
my absence - a physician
There were three other
gentlemen on board who

wanted to come here to break
fast and then go out sight
seeing for the day but I
did not feel I could have
them as I know I could not
get breakfast for five with
out delaying them some.
One was a Dr Torrence
from Ontario Canida.
They will be here later on
perhaps to dinner. Well we
took Hattie down - and
went off to the "Coloma"
yesterday afternoon. It is a
little gem of a ship every
thing kist as cozy as possible
only two other passengers
a mother and daughter. 4
ladies in all. So quiet and
lovely. They seemed so
happy in the prospect of
having 6 weeks of quiet rest

There are no uncomfortable
odors about a sailing ship
and one is not half so like
ly to be sea sick. I told
the Capt he might come
back after me next year
Dr Kerr and I. But we do
not know of course what
will be by that time - only
I am sure the Dr will
be obliged to rest. We can
not hear from them for
3 months at least. It will
seems such a long time
If the Dr had been well
and with us we would so
have like to remain
until they sailed. But it
does seem as though the trip
will do them both good. It
was expected they would
have this morning at day
light - and we were coming
back on the evening str.

[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
but if we go home a year hence it will not be
long. Now God bless you my dear Mary
now you must
write me every
thing I have no
one to borrow
from. We will
try and write
by every mail
Is it 37 or
38 - our Mary
is - I think
38. With love
to all
Sister
Mattie
