Canton April 24, 1909
To all the dear
ones at Home-
You will see by the date that I am this
day 73 years old. I am thinking quite likely
that your thoughts will be turning in this direction
to-day and I will write at least enough to
let you know that I have not forgotten you.
Bella had planned for a birth-day part for me
but plans do not always turn out as [?expectid?]
Mother Fulton now 83 years old was to be at
the head of the party- then Dr Mary Fulton and
Hattie and Mr & Mrs Boggs & Mrs Durham Dr [?Machle?] &c
but it so happened that the Fultons were engaged
to be elsewhere; Hattie had gone to Macao with a
friend_ the little grandchild and his mother were
at the peak and William away on a country trip
to Sau-Ning_ He was here however two days ago
and we had a sort of a preliminary birth-day
supper at which were present Bella William and myself_
To-day a birth day dinner was enjoyed by Bella and
myself_ I have quite enjoyed this quiet kind of a
birth day. It is Saturday and so no school work
after 9A.M. I suppose Martha will be at home
now in a very few days. It does not seem long
since she left here.
Bella and i are going quietly on with our
work get tired a little more easily than when
younger but otherwise get along with work much
the same. She has morning lessons with the

women and children and two day schools and
a- full Sabbath days work with a class of boys from
the High School and work with the women and
girls.
Our Men’s & boy’s school is about the same size
as last year. They have so far been doing very good
work_ Dr. Maeble is giving us good help and
it is a great relief to have him here in cases of
sickness_ We have had quite a number of cases
of “Beri-beri” a disease known out here for the past
two or three years but not much previously_ The
feet and legs swell and a change of location seems
the best remedy_ Yesterday one of our students died
from bubonic plague_ I suppose he must have taken
it over in the city as I have not heard of its being
on this side of the river_ I hope there may not be
other cases. Foreigners, as we call ourselves, seem to
be able to resist it and recover, at least sometimes, but
with the Chinese it is [--always--] almost sure to be
fatal_ We have lovely weather almost ever since
Chinese New Years and a good deal of rainy weather.
The lack of sunshine may make it less healthy_ There
is no[--t--] particular illness here among the foreigners_
They have commenced building operations- have
the foundations nearly finished for out dining hall_
Mr Dollar of San Francisco is going to furnish us with
quite a good deal of lumber so I hope we will
get along_ I had another cordial letter from Mr
Severance two days ago. He says when we have a
demand for more buildings needed- he thinks our appeal
have will meet with a quick response_
Will write more later_ Ever so much love to you all
—Henry—

“Beri-beri”
