Title

Letter from Henry to Mary, June 28, 1911

Subject

Typhoons; Boats; Coronations; Processions; Birthdays

Description

Henry writes this letter aboard a boat and tells Mary about their eating habits. He discusses the effects of the weather on his travels and reflects on how 40 years ago the captain of their boat relied on fishermen to tell whether there was a storm coming or not. He describes the Coronation ceremonies, which he did not attend but remembers from attending the torch-light procession at the Queen's sixty-year Jubilee. He concludes by reminiscing about meals at home.

On board the [?Chimba?]
June 28th 1911
Dear Mary:-
I wrote to Clara this morning and as it is now
Almost 4 P.M I will write to you and thus finish my
epistorlary work for this voyage. Since writing the above I
have had four-o-clock tea. The boy brings around coffee or tea
and toast in the morning about 1/2 past 6 and tea and
crackers at 4 P.M very regularly_ Our eating times therefore are
1/2 past 6 A.M 1/2 past 8 A.M. 1/2 past 12 PM, 4P.M and 7P.M.
so we are not in danger of starving- Our lady passenger
who has been keeping her room for two days made her ap-
pearance at the noon meal. She says it has not been
sea-sickness but a bad head-ache and back-ache that
has been keeping her in her room_ We have had a smother
sea to-day and are now between Swatow & Hong Kong_
Th[--e--] heavy swell that we had after leaving Shangai was,
the Captain says, due to a typhoon that had passed up the
coast. He says we shall be twelve hours behind getting
to HongKong that is till daylight to-morrow. If things had
been favorable and we had arrived tonight I could have
reached Canton to-morrow morning. I hope now to be in
time to catch the day boat and reach home in the afternoon
so as to be present at the closing exercises of the [?term?] in the
evening_ There are a lot of small fishing boats
now in sight. I think they belong to Swatow but they
come out a long way from the shore_ No doubt Hattie
will remember seeing such a fleet 40 years ago when
we were on our way to Synod at Ningpo_ There they
were all headed for the shore_ The Captain said "We
are in for a storm. Those fellow never make a [?mistake?]"
And sure enough we did get it and had to seen into
a sheltered cove and anchor for a day and a half-
There is not much in the way of news on ship-board
as the days are so much alike. It has been a nice

rest these four days and it has not been uncomfortably warm.
Had I gone to see the exercises I could have told you a
lot about the Coronation "ceremonies" or "functions" whatever
they might be called that took place in Shanghai last
Thursday June 22- There were service in the Cathedral
at Eleven A.M- then various parades during the day ending
by a torch light pro-cession and fire works in the Evening_
The Council had their meetings till 5 P.M and I preferred
at Eight-o-clock or not very long thereafter going to bed instead
of fighting my way through an immense crowd and standing
up all the Evening to see the torch light pro-cession_ I
saw the torch-light pro-cession at the Queen's sixty-years
Jubilee and I thought all I had [illegible] was to imagine
that over again. People who saw it spoke of a trolley
can with electric lights so as to represent a crown as very
fine_ I do not know whether you ever knew Alice Fitch [?when?]
she was in Wooster. George Fitch came one day to the [illegible]
and asked Dr Garret Dr Lowrie Mr Lobenstine and myself to [?take?]
dinner with them that evening_ I supposed it was an in-
formal affair, but after we arrived others came until there
was quite a roomfull_ When we came to take dinner
I thought it seemed rather an elaborate affair and won-
dered if they always got up such fine dinner for a few
friends_ When it came to the cake however one was placed
before Alice with 7 lighted candles and then it came out
that it was Alice's birth and that also explained why
she was at one end of the table as hostess and [?her father?]
at the other as host. The elder Mrs Fitch was not in
Shanghai but with her daughters up in [?Kunau?]_ There
is a repost but I do not know whether true or not, that
Alice is engaged to be married_ There were seven candles
on the cake but her father said "You just add twenty."
I wonder if you keep up your flock of hens and Em her flock of
sheep . If I add nothing to this you may conclude that I arrived
safe in Hong Kong. I will probably need to hurry off in the morning
and may have no time. I remember so well the long breakfasts and

dinners and supper we had in the dining room when I was at home and now I can
imagine Hattie & Em & Sarah & Clara & Mary around the same table having the same kind of good time

Much love Your aff -Henry-

Jubilee

Henry-
