April 11th 1910
Dear Sister Mary;
I ought to have written to you on March
31st to wish you another happy year. All I can
do now is to say that it did not pass without
our thinking about it. It happened on that day that
Mattie was here for awhile and your birth-day
was talked about. The next day I meant to have
written but missed it. All the same I wish you
may have a pleasant and useful year. We are
growing older all of us - have passed by a good deal
the half of our Earthly Existence. Your last letter
brought a reminder of this - that is the last letter from
home did - in the information it brought that our
dear Cousin Gilbert has gone from our sight on this
side of the river- I have always had much the same
fEeling towards him that he seems to have had towards
his Seville cousins my feeling as though he were a brother. It
always seemed to me that he and Aunt Fay were much
like a portion of the family. They were at our house
for a much longer time than any of the other [--members
of--] relatives. Edward + Gilbert + I played and worked
together as boys on the old farm. I think Aunt Fay
and Gilbert were once there two years at one time.
How lonely Bessie will feel. She took such loving
care of her father- which he fully appreciated.
We are going on as usual- have had an
unusually cool spring and it is not hot weather yet-
thick clothing + under clothing is still comfortable. Bella
is just now taking some friends around to see the school

buildings + scholars. One is from Seattle - is a teacher
in Washington University there - has been in Canton
for a few weeks arranging for students to go to
the University for an Education. Another is a
lady from Manila-
I do not know whether we have Ever written
to you how nicely Mr Severance is standing by
us. Early in the year we got a cablegram from
the Board saying that we could go ahead and use
$8000 mex for filling the Campus - making walls around
the premisses and [?rejuvenating?] the old buildings. We
learned afterwards what we suspected at the time that
Mr Severance was at the bottom of it. He pays the
whole himself. A little later in response to a
letter from Dr A. A. Fulton he promised to give $600 Mex
a year for six years towards keeping 21 scholars with
an Education. He farther wrote to me asking whether
anything more could be done in this direction. Evidently
we have at least one good man at home interested
in our work. I have had a photograph taken of our
premises and intend to send you one am out just
but will get some more taken, This seem Encoura-
ging in our work. We have now 120 scholars a larger
number than we Ever had at one time before- have had
40 theological students' and 80 in the [--lov--] Academic Department.
Bella's school is also doing well and her work among the
women + in two villages.
I was Elected by the Mission as a delegate to
a committee on "Unification" whatever that may be
which is to meet in Shanghai April 27th + Expect
to start for that city two weeks from Friday next-

亲爱的玛丽修女;
