Closing Hours of the Life of Richard V. Noyes.
His illness - malarial fever and bubonic plague - commenced on Sabbath
afternoon May 22d, 1904. On the following Wednesday evening, about ten' clock
alarming symptoms. He awoke from a quiet sleep with high fever and
his mind wandering. From what he said in rational moments it seemed probable
that he thought he might not recover though he did not say so directly. Once
he said "The doctor says I must keep quiet for two days; that if I try to get
up I will die." I replied "If you die you will go to heaven you know"
"Oh yes" he said "I would go to heaven, but what about the work?" once he
exclaimed with emphasis "God is love". Another time he broke out in a
short earnest prayer perfectly rational beginning with "Oh Lord we thank
Thee for this pleasant evening" and ending "Help us to serve the Lord Jesus
Christ all the rest of our lives".
When the doctors had given up all hope, and not long before the end, it
was thought best to tell him plainly his condition, but without much hope that
he would fully understand it. To our surprise however it seemed to restore
him at once consciousness, and very soon he said "Father I am thinking now
of that hymn you like so well" My Heavenly home is bright and fair". Shall
I sing it to you I said. He said "Yes". I sang it through and then asked him
"Do you feel that Jesus loves you and is precious?" "Yes He is precious
very precious" was his reply.
He then said that he wished to leave a special gift for his mother,
named it and said "Will knows whereit is", then, turning towards her while a
sweet smile played over his countenance, earnestly and lov[--o--]ingly came vhe part-
ing message "Let not you heart be troubled". Looking towards his brother he
said "If I am going good-bye Will". Then he sent his farewell to relatives
in China and the United States, naming the place where we live".
He continued "Tell the Fati scholars to serve the Christ whom I have
tried to serve" Tell them that I have enjoyed very much the few months that
I have been with them" "Tell them that I joined the church here in China,
and that I would rather be buried in the Canton cemetery than any other place
in the world" He went on to say in the Chinese language "Jesus [u]loves[/u] China,
and He wants you to love Him more than you love yourselves, more than you love
your families, more than you love your friends".
Call Will he said and then asked him to find on his desk an unfinished
letter to one of his old scholars in Honolulu, finish and send it. He had
written his portion of the letter in the midst of his feveron Monday morning.
Then he said "Write to Schorger and Porter and tell them to [u]cling close to
Christ[/u]".
