My dear daughter, As I have run out
of letter paper, I will send back to
Penn. a sheet which came from there.
I received your letter last week and
perhaps ought to have answered it soon
er, but I have so many temporal cares
at present that I find but little time
to write or study. I was glad to re-
ceive your letter, and hope you will
not allow your great "[u]embarrassment[/u]" pre
vent you from writing me again. We
received your epistle to Sarah last eve-
ning and did not consider its length
as an objectionable feature.
We are all enjoying our usual health
Last tuesday Edward and myself at-
tended the meeting of Wooster Pres-
bytery at Congress, which met for
the purpose of ordaining Messrs
Myers and Leyenbergar. Other mem-
bers of the family would like to have
gone, but could not very conveniently.
We saw the good brethren of Woos-
ter Presbytery, and many other old ac-
quaintances, among whom was the
Rev Wm [William] McCandlish who formerly
preached in Wooster. The exercises
were very interesting. Each of the
candidates for ordination preached
a sermon, Mr M from the words,
Go teach all nations &c, and Mr L.
from the passage, He that goeth forth
and weepeth bearing previous seed &c.
Mr Barr preached the ordination ser-
mon from the words of Paul. Unto
me who am the least of all saints
is this grace given &c. You will per-
ceive from the subjects that all the
sermons were considerably pervaded
by the missionary element. I under-
stand that Mr M. is going to India and
Mr L. to China. In regard to personal ap-
pearance Mr M. has decidedly the advan-
tage. I hope these young men may live
long to labour among the heathen.
You have probably heard that [Note: underlined in red] two
of our missionaries in India have
been murdered. viz Messrs Janvier
and [?Loerenthat?]. The latter was a very
distinguished scholar.
Mrs Julius Harris has been very sick,
but is now a little better. Mr Rodnee
Russel has been married to a Miss
Price. I dont know as I have got
the christian name of Mr Russel
right, but perhaps you will be able
to know who I mean. Andrew Dins
more got the position in Wisconsin
for which there were two candid
ates. You may tell Henry that we
have purchased a new [u]mowing
machine[/u], which we tried yester-
day and it works very well.
We can now mow our meadows when
we please, and not be dependent
on other folks. We have had already
several applications to mow for others.
I am afraid the Seville musical as-
sociation will not be entirely
harmonious in respect to the con-
cert. Mrs B. thinks she has not
quite as conspicuous a part as she
is deserving and I believe threatens
the association with entire absence on
the occasion. It is a pity here music
al talents are not better appreciated.
I understand the people here are
going to get up a pic-nic on the 4th
of July, the particulars I have not
yet learned. I think probable an
attempt will be made to replenish
the funds of the soldier's aid society.
Since writing the above Martha has
very unexpectedly made her appearance
among us. We were not expecting her till
tomorrow. Her trip home was rather expen-
sive, as she had to pay 2,50 for private
conveyance from Haysville to Ashland.
It has been dry weather for some time, but
to day we have had some fine showers.
We calculate to use [u]ned[/u] in our mowing
machine if he will work. Rover is well but
has sometimes short rations. It seems rather
lonesome in Seville since the national guard
left. We find it difficult to sustain our
prayer meetings. Jacob Bell is here yet, though
he has sold his blacksmith shop to [?Streeter?]
the husband of Adeline Cook. I suppose you
calculate to be at home in about two weeks.
I do not know whether any of us will go to
Hudson at Commencement. I do not think
of any thing more at present that will
be of particular interest. I hope you will
try to live a life consecrated to the Service
