Description

In this letter, Henry discusses the health of his family members. His mother is feeling better, Mattie has not been well in the past three days, and his baby is teething. Henry writes that he found that San Ui, where he traveled in February, was quite changed compared to the last time that he had been there. He tells Edward about the Board's plans to set up a school and a chapel in San Ui. Henry mentions that they have had several applicants for baptism. He also writes about his school and chapel in Canton and says that he has been thinking of making people who attend pay for their own rice.

Canton March 15th 1879
Dear Bro Edward
It is so long since I wrote
home last that I almost forgot
whom I wrote to but I think it was
Mother. I am so glad she is feeling so
much better. I was away to tea last
night and so must write what I can
this morning. We are all quite well.
Baby was having considerable trouble with
his teeth awhile ago but is getting along
nicely now. Some of them are coming
through and I presume is worst trouble
is over. Mattie is feeling not quite so
well for the past two or three days owing
I presume to the weather which has not
been very favorable. I spoke about our
country trip in Feb. We had a very pleas
ant trip. I found considerable change
in San Ui. There were 9 church
members of our church present at
communion and three from the
English Wesleyan Church besides Mr Henry
my self + wife so we had quite a [?goodly?]
minister. Last year a large temple was
rented but the chapel had not yet
been moved into it. There is a good
sized piece of ground behind it +
the Board had already authorized the
money for putting up a school building
So I made a bargain with a man to
put up the school building + put the
chapel all in order for $182-. I suppose
it is nearly done by this time. I expect to
go down and open the chapel a week from next Sabbath

This gives us a very good arrangement
there. The building is just at the outside
of the city so that from rear of the
yard I can go out and away among
the hills without getting into the city at
all. The front of the chapel is on
a very good street leading from
the East gate of the city to a large
business place some five miles
away called Kong [?Mim?]. There
is always a good deal of passing
during the day and so the
place is a very favorable one
for a chapel. There were two
applicants for baptism who were
received and two children
were also baptized. I have no
doubt ^but we shall organize a
church there during the year
The second station Chik Hom
is somewhat more than a days journey
beyond San Ui. It was opened
last year. It is a large market
town. There was one applicant
for baptism there who professes to
be much pleased with the doctrine
and appeared very well. He lived
at some distance and [--th--] as he
had not told his father yet about the

matter concluded to wait till some
other time before being baptized.
Here in Canton besides my
old chapel I have a school in
the building behind the house. It
is a day school or boys - have
now 30 on the roll and about
25 in regular attendance. I am
trying the experiment of requiring
any who come here to [illegible] to
pay for their own rice. I think likely
I may get some scholars after awhile
as boarders to live in [--the--] house.
All the downstairs part of the
house is now occupied and a
beginning made up stairs so
that I shall have use for all
the room. The front of the
building up stairs where the girls
used to study I have taken for
my study as it is better situated
to get the light and breeze than
the room in the house.
We are now having more
or less rainy wEather and I suppose
will have for the next three months.
Dr Sarah Anderson is with us now
on a visit but expects to go to
Soochow as her permanent location

I saw Hattie last night at Dr
Graves. She seems about as usual
Bella wishes me to send her love
to you all. Dr S seems to
retain a pleasant recollection
of her visit at our home How
glad I would be to see you
all. Now I will cose as
my pencil needs sharpening
and I find I have not a
knife with me I expect the
girls will [illegible] that I do not
I notice Mattie last [Note: page crumpled, unable to read]
quite a pile of letters in her
bureau to go to day.
Good bye for this time
with my much
love to all
Your Aff Bro
-Henry-
