Letter from H.V. Noyes to Father, July 3, 1874
Birthdays; Missionaries; Households; Councils and synods; Cost; Chapels
Henry writes to his father about how they happened to have a social evening in the house where he was staying that they thought to be a celebration of his father's birthday. The last time the "social" met was for Hattie's birthday last year. Henry has been thinking about going to the synod. The board will be going over expenses and deciding who will be going. Henry does not think that anyone will be going home except Dr. Happer. Henry will be going to San-Ui and will be there for about a week and plans on going to synod right when he gets back. He is also going to Chefoo and wants to go to Peking but does not think that will happen. Their Chinese teacher wants to go home with them and study for two to three years at Wooster.

Section of Clara's Journal, August 30th - December 25th 1875
<div style="text-align: left;">Family; Birthdays; Travel; Brothers and sisters; Morphine; Fever; Diarrhea; God; Grief; Thanksgiving day; Chest pain; Tumors; Death and burial; Christmas; Sermons</div>
These journal entries from Clara follow Francis's last couple of months and his worsening condition. The entries start the day before his 37th birthday. Frank is afraid that he won't be able to see his siblings that are overseas. Frank was upset when Sarah left because she had become his caretaker; Clara filled the role in her absence. Clara remarks that she feels as if their "treasure is slipping away", the family worries more every day. Frank mentions Hannah's (his wife's) death and is upset about how all her things were distributed around the house. Clara returns her things to where they belong. As the days go on, Frank knows he is going to die and asks that his family not forget him. A doctor finds a tumor and soon after, he falls unconscious and passes on as if he had "fallen asleep." Hannah's engagement ring is placed on his finger when he is buried so they can be together. This was copied for Martha on July 10th, 1877.

Letter from Henry to Clara, August 20, 1884
Dwellings; Grapes; Railroad stations; Swiming; International relations
Henry writes to Clara having learned that a grapevine now grows across their house. He is glad that Mary is heading east and that Blaine has been nominated for president. He hears that a railroad will interrupt their farm but thinks they might be compensated for it. He relates that Willie and Richard Varnum have gone "sea bathing," and that he will return to Canton unless a war develops. Mr. Fulton in Hong Kong thinks the schools should close. Henry believes the French will first take Foochow and notes they have already occupied Kee-lung. Henry sent a paper he wrote for the Mission Conference to the "Evangelist" and "The Herald Presbyters" called "The Chinese in Christian lands."
