Diary, 1863
Railroad trains; Paperhanging; Cooking; Soldiers; United States--History--Civil War, 1861-1865; Diaries; Brothers and sisters; Health; Physicians; Drugs; Voting; Christianity; Death; Sleep; Heaven; Funeral rites and ceremonies; Textiles; Hymns
Although the diary is of 1863 make and labeled as Harriet's, it appears to be written by Hattie in 1864 and 1866 (beginning on page 77) and her sister Clara in 1875 (starting on page 99). It then transitions to an unknown author of a set of poems from 266 to 269. The diary concludes with various lists of information, such as costs of fabric, addresses, deaths, and more poems. Hattie's section of the journal discusses her work during the Civil War. She volunteered alongside the soldiers, performing tasks like cooking and cleaning, while Henry worked in a religious capacity. In the 1866 section, she reminiscences on her time at Point of Rocks. Clara writes about her siblings, both the ones in Ohio and the ones in China. Frank is very sickly and much of the diary chronicles his struggles with his health. In one passage, she details how Frank wanted to vote for Governor, for he feared it would be his last chance. Francis hoped to live long enough to see Harriet and Henry on their visit home from China, but he passed away after months of struggling. Clara's portion of the diary seems to have served the function of documenting Frank's last months of life so it concludes shortly after his death and funeral, including his love for his late wife, Hannah.

Section of Letter from Hattie and Electa
Anniversaries; Songs; Impersonation; Humor; Drama; Parties
Harriet writes about a fiftieth-anniversary party she and Electa attended. Mr. Fisher sang a song called "Get a wiggle on", with Mr. Henry interjecting. Dr. Niles joked that Elmira College wanted to give out an L.L.D. and that she decided to accept it. MacNamara's Band played, consisting of Drs. Dobsin, Creighton, Fisher, and Boyd. Miss Butler impersonated an old lady, complaining that she wanted to buy some red tape only to discover the Presbyterian Mission had bought it all itself. She said that Paul was not in favor of Union, as he wouldn't even marry. A drama took place centered around South China missionary Mrs. Kunkle and her struggle to manage mission accounts. Electa and Hattie found the party to be the greatest they had ever attended.

Letter from Harriet to Dear Ones at Home, April 19
Hymns; Sermons; Sunday; Language transfer (Language learning); Missionaries
This is a letter from early in Harriet's time in China. She remarks on the people they have lost in their family, Cynthia and Hannah. Although she knows they are well and in heaven, she misses them dearly. She also misses the family at home, especially her father. Because it is Sunday, she sang a bit at the service, but people look at her oddly. She does not know Chinese yet, and cannot sing to her scholars in Chinese. She spent some time with women in the village Henry took her to, but they had a hard time understanding each other. She is currently in charge of a little boy names Alfred Turner and a young kitten and both are turning out to be a lot of work.

Letter from Harriet to Father, November 28, 1884
Travel; Steamboats; Building--Planning; Second Advent; France--Foreign relations--China; China--Foreign relations--France; Baptists
Hattie tells her father that she has been drawing the plan of their house in Macau. She describes the house and says that the views of the sunset remind her of signs highlighted in H. Grattan Guinness's book "The Approaching End of the Age". She really likes this book and wants her father to read it so she will try to send a copy. According to this book, the second coming of the Lord should be expected 75 years from 1844, the year Harriet was born. Therefore, Harriet believes that she might live to see it. The steamer they are on has the American flag. It used to be Chinese but they feared the French so they sold it to Russell & Co., along with other steamers.

Letter from Hattie to Father, July 1, 1874
Birthdays; Organ (Musical Instrument); Mail Steamers; Letter writing
Harriet tells her father how she thought of him on his birthday, and how excited she is to hopefully be able to visit home in a year or two. She talks about the Social Meeting hosted in her house and how she broke a lamp while playing organ. She asks her father to tell her brother Edward that anecdote, and to also tell how that particular organ will end up in the school chapel while a new one for which they have raised money will go in the church. She ends discussing the steamship mail, hoping to receive a letter in the next shipment and apologizing for her brevity due to needing to mail the letter she is writing as soon as possible.

Letter from Hattie to Edward, November 9, 1872
Presbyterian Church--Hymns; Music--Religious aspects--Presbyterians; Piano; Singing
Harriet writes to thank her brother for sending them music, some of which Edward wrote. She thinks his pieces are especially wonderful. Her voice has gotten better since being in China, but she is out of practice on the piano. She hopes they will be able to sing together again soon. She says goodnight but asks him to send more music.
