<text>Canton China
May 12th 1881.
My dear Mattie -
I send with this
Dr Ellinwood's letter . It came
I suppose enclosed to Dr Happer
so I did not get it until I
came back from Hong Kong.
He has written you a nice letter.
It is very pleasant to have the
Board so cordial about letting
you come home. If you see
Dr Ellinwood I hope you will
enjoy meeting him. He is really
good and kind, and I always
feel sorry that he got into such
a bad [?mess?] with us, not exactly
his fault either, though he was by
no means blameless. But we all
have our faults and I am
sure he is sorry that it all was
as it was. Henry says he ^[Dr E] has
never written a line to him
since he came back. I
suppose it is rather awkward

for him to write if he has
nothing special to write about
I am anxious to hear from
you at Japan and know
whether you could go on by the
Belgic. I heard last night that
the Peking is full so that Dr
Blodgett and his family can
not go on [?her?] and talk of
going by Europe. It seems
so strange that just now there
should be so much travel
across the Pacific. Miss
Johnstone had a long letter
from Miss Rowe at Point de Galle
getting on nicely. I suppose
she will be home this week.
Mr Parkes is laid up again
with rheumatism and Miss
Stein is miserable with a stiff neck
+ neuralgia- I must try and
get down to see them if I
can this evening. I am
quite busy and I think you
will be glad to know that
I have been able to keep from

being lonely. I think resolutely
that the time will not be long until
some one will come- and when
there is plenty of company so near,
under the same roof, one need
not be alone if company is desired.
Mrs Henry says if I am lonely
at night Mr Henry shall sit on
the shai-pau all night. I go to
sleep as soon as I get in bed and
never waken until it is time to
get up. They say out in the
school that the noise from
that theater over on Honam
keeps them awake but I have
never heard a sound. I find
your bed very comfortable and
the mosquito net answers very well
for one person who sleeps in the
middle of the bed, and never
moves all night - We have had
really cold nights and now it is the
middle of May and no warm
weather yet - and every day
is making the summer
shorter. I was up on Shamin
Saturday and Mr Fulton

+ Mr + Mrs White persuaded me
to stay there to tea . She said the
reason she did not ask us to come
before you went away was because
she had no [?finger?] bowls. She was
telling some of her teachers experiences
I imagine she was a good teacher.
And she is a woman who has
considerable ability in some ways.
She says she likes their litte home-
I do not think I shall be disturbed-
I must leave a little blank the
envelope is so thin .The matter of
changing the communion was not brought
up at the prayer meeting there were so few
present + I imagine it is adjourned [illegible] [illegible]

to think you will
read this in the
