<text>Melville House 1104 Mar
ket Street
June 11th 1892
Dear ones at Home,
You will have been for days
looking for letters from us ere this
reaches you But I have been
waiting to know what to write as
to our plans. This morning am
not in a condition to tell you
when we shall leave this city.
Arrived on Wednesday. Have
found every one gone whom
we wished to see almost. The
Masters Hartwells, Kerrs, Mr Rhoda
the Stubbs family, have seen
the Condits, took luncheon with
them on Thursday, went from
them to call upon the Thomsons
who are in Berkley. They leave
for Boston a week from to day
Saturday Mrs Thomson was
away at a meeting but got back

before we left. Has spoken 3 times
already. Dr Ketchum Angie
Blackmans husband is the pastor
in their church there. I saw her
but not her husband. She looks
somewhat as in former years, has
5 children 4 daughters and one son
saw one of her daughters. They
speak very highly of him as a pas-
tor. Were at Mrs Robins yesterday
at Luncheon. The Dr is trying to
do something towards raising funds
for his Asylum. I have not been
able to help him any thus far
because almost all the ladies
are away gone off for the summer.
We are just a month too late
to see "the foreingers." The Dr called
upon the Chinese Consul yesterday
and there is to be a called meeting
of the six companies to see what
can be done. You see my husband
is a "do man," the dearest goodest
"do man" in the world, and he goes
right along through thick an thin

without being discouraged at any
thing. Said this morning he might
have to stay another week here.
Getting funds will be a work of
time and keep him on the go no
one can tell how long, but if life
and health is spared we feel he
will succeed. We will not in any
case now get home before week after
next. I do not dare think much
about Seville, am so anxious and
so impatient to see you all. It takes
all my resolution to keep saying to
your good brother, Stay just as long
as you want to but that is just
what I do say, hoping all the time
it will not be many days more.
We had a delightful time at Mrs
Prestons. Laura made me think
so much of Mary. Was glad to find
that they were not poor people.
Dear Mary is so brave, bearing her
loss with such patience and sweet
ness of Spirit, that ones heart goes out
to her. She has two of the dearest

little darlings ever was. Wants to go
back to Tacoma to live "has
enough property to support herself
and family so it will not be necessary
for her to do anything in that line"
Walter is a fine business man
and [?Tud?] doing well. Both Mrs P
and Walter own a farm. Walter
owns the house in which they live
besides at best a building lot in
East Polland, ill church members
and doing more or less religious work.
I will not write a long letter as we
shall hope to get to Seville at least
within a short time after its arrival
We may be here until some time
week after next, but I hope can
spend Sabbath 2 weeks from to
morrow at Manito Springs. I dreamed
last night that Hattie and Miss
Butler arrived here en route for China Miss
Butler stooped so and Hattie said she
had had an operation upon her heart
that the orbit was to large and had to
be shortened. Hattie had grown so
wrinkled looked thin. I thought oh if
we could only have reached home be
fore they started but it is too late to do
any thing now they are on the way.

[Continued vertically on the first page]
We have not yet found any letters from home here for us. Do hope
you are all well. The weather is almost cold. Dr is better than
when we left China
You will be as
tonished at our box-
es, and our trunk
may get to Seville
before we do. You
see we are coming
Harrison is nom
inated . If he had
only not signed
the Chinese exclu
sion act Blaine
must subside now
No chance to be
President.
With love
Mattie

Ketchum Angie Blackman
