Canton China
June 13th 1881.
My dear Father -
It is almost time
to send the letters but I will
write a few lines more.
Yesterday was the Communion
season in Dr Happer's church
There was a large congregation
and seven were received.
We are hoping to hear soon
whether we can have a
new chapel or not. I
suppose there is little doubt
they will let us rebuild the
Hospital Chapel if they do
not grant enough to build
another. Dr Kerr is
building some new wards
has them nearly finished
and Mr Simmons of the
Baptist Mission. Tell
Mattie it is possible that
the German houses at

[?Yau Lau Mun?] may be sold
and if so I should not be
greatly surprised if our mission
would be in favor of buying.
I think the new brethren would
favor it warmly. Certainly
if it is decided to build any
more in Canton it would be
best to get that if they possibly
can. It is an excellent property
but very valuable nearly $15,000.
I do not know whether they
would be willing to sell it
for any less or not.
Mr Faber has gone home
and perhaps will arrange
matters so that his friends
will buy it and [?carry?] on
a Mission there. Mr [?Blankenmeyer?]
is pleasantly situated in Wisconsin
has charge of two churches.
Did I write to Mattie
that they say Mr Pearce
is much attracted by Verdie
Happer. I rather think

all would be pleased if she
should join the London Mission.
Mary was very much taken
with Mr [?Wood?] Mr Henry's friend
but I fear it was all on one
side. Mr Stoaks has gone
to Amoy. This will not be
very interesting to you but
Mattie can explain it, I
have made a beginning with
my letters have written twenty two
for this mail. I hope Mattie
will help you in the Monthly
Concert. Our next mail
by the Tokio is expected a
week from to-day in HongKong.
If Mattie made as good
a voyage over as expected
she will reach home in a
nice time in June. It is
such a lovely month.
I am going to a new
school to-day which I
expect will be a very good
one. I hope the teacher

[?Tung Kin?] and her husband
who is one of the aristocrats and
an Elder in Henry's new church
will be able to do a great deal
of good in the neighborhood.
It seemed very nice her
Father and Husband took
all the trouble about getting
the house and school &c.
Of course he is going to live there
and so it may have been to
a great extent a matter of self
interest but nevertheless it
seemed very nice to have
Christian men to take hold and
for any reason interest themselves
in getting up a girls school.
We have I think more
than three hundred girls
and women under instruction
now. I remember when I
first came. I thought if we
could ever get [?200?] it would
seem very encouraging.
With warmest love
I must say good-bye your aff daughter Harriet.

/
/
Faber
/
Blankenmeyer

Wood,
/
Stoaks

Harriet
