Description
Harriet writes to Martha, thanking her for the shawls that her sister sent. She inquires about Kitty's address and hopes that she will be returning to China soon. She talks about writing to Clara about the box from Philadelphia. Harriet informs her sister that Mr. Parkes has been laid up with rheumatism and Mrs. White is trying to self diagnose herself by talking to Dr. Kerr. Mr. Henry is going into the country with the new Doctor, Dr. Stubbart. Mary may come back, her pastor wrote to Dr. Ellinwood on the matter. Mrs. Kerr has been in pain as of recent but sends all her love. Harriet says that Johnnie Happer is looking forward to seeing Mattie at the Wooster commencement, but she fears he will be disappointed.

My dear Mattie
I see our sister
in the China mail which
will interest you. "Dr O Brien
for services rendered to the Roman
Catholic Mission in Hong Kong
has been appointed by the Pope
a Knight of the Order of St Gregory
the Great of the Civil Class with
special privileges", 21st The box
you sent back from San Francisco
came this evening. It seemed
nice to have it come back again
and think that you had put
in the shawls and tied it up.
I wonder how you got them
both in. I am sure you will
need to have no fears about my
being cold next winter with two
such warm shawls. I am
afraid the plaid one cost a
great deal it is so nice and
fine. It is very pretty and
I know will be very warm
such fine soft ones always
are. I was so uncomfortable
as to how the address Kitty gave
me when you write please
tell me how you direct letters
to her. I hope she will get well
and strong at home so as to
come back to China. 22nd
I have just been writing to Clara
and told her about the content
of the box from Philadelphia.
Have been down to Mr Parkes'
this morning. He is laid up
again with rheumatism like
other people he has got so he
wants to keep it a secret that
he is out of sorts, is trying
homeopathic remedies now sure does
the change of [?Doctress?] White and
[?Doctress?] Happer. Mrs White
has at last put herself under
Dr Kerrs care but until he
learned that she was trying
to find out from him what
was the matter with her, so
that she could doctor herself.
Mr White is exceedingly kind they
seem to think a great deal of
each other which is well [u]very[/u]
well indeed. Mr Henry tells
Mr Fulton that he has got to go to
the country with the new Doctor -
Doctor Stubbart. He evidently does
not enjoy the idea much although
he talks as strongly as ever [u]by spell[/u]
about his [u]intense[/u] desire to go to the
country- I hope he will do a
great deal of good and I doubt
not he will but "the old [?wine?] is better".
He seems to think Mary will probably
come back with you. Her pastor
in Indianapolis wrote to Dr
Ellinwood and he wrote back
that they would be only too glad
to send her. Mrs Henry says she
wonders if she will throw her arms
about Mr Henry as Mr Fulton does.
He is an odd genius if he catches
Dr Kerr sitting down he puts his
hands on his head as though he
were a little boy. The other evening
Dr Kerr was telling something about
some Doctor that I suppose Mrs
Fulton had [u]written[/u] about and he
spoke of him as being associated
with Mrs Fulton -and Mr Fulton
said to him Oh! you get out it
sounded so funny to be said to Dr
Kerr but they all laughed. I think
they would be glad if he had
some other place to live-
Mrs Kerr does not seem very
well she is in constant pain all
over and Dr Kerr dsnt [does not] know
what to do for her. AYau rubs
her for about an hour every
morning. She says I must
always send her love to you
all. Her visit at our house
seems almost the only bright
spot in her last trip to
America I am glad she
enjoyed it so much Josie
has not written to them for
the last three mails Isnt
it shameful. Johnnie Happer
is looking forward to seeing
you at the Wooster Commencement
but I fear he will be
disappointed. San Lok is
doing nicely as a teacher in
[?Fung Kins?] place ------
