Canton March 29th 1879
My dear sister Em
I was glad to get the
home letters the day they came. We
were hardly looking for them until
the day following and I was ex-
pecting to start away for a weeks
trip into the country and so
feared I should have to wait a
week longer before getting the home
news. The morning we got
them a few of us were going
for the day to White Cloud
mountain [--nr--] a place [near]
8 miles away. The party con-
sisted of John & Mary Happer, Mr
Henry, Mrs Chalmers, Mr Edge
Dr S J Anderson my wife and
myself. I went early in the
morning to mail some letters
and was coming right back
to start for the hills [--away--] and to my sur-
prize found that the American
Mail had just arrived. So I took

the letters and papers and we
all had a good time reading
home news in our chairs. We
had a pleasant day and got
back soon after dark. The next
morning I got away as I expected
early in the morning took a
small boat this time as I went
alone next time Bella will go.
I left at 1/4 before 6 in the morning
and reached San Ui at just
12-o-clock the next day and
so had the afternoon there. I
do not know that I wrote [--bef--]
that when we were down before
I bargained with a contractor
to build a school house and
put the newly rented building
in order for a chapel. The
work was just completed and
I went down to open the
chapel. It is a very suitable
place in almost every way
only separated by one house
from the old place. The
old place was about 15 feet
front by 56 in depth. This was

divided into three rooms- a chapel
on the front, next a sort of
visiting room and back of that
the room for the assistant to live
in. The new premises are
about 40 feet front and
94 deep quite a difference
On the front part is quite a
good building which we have
made into a chapel, a smaller
room for prayer meetings &c [--an--]
a room for the native preacher
and a room for the missionary
to live in when there. Back of
this building in quite a large
piece of ground which is now
enclosed with a wall, and has
a school house for 30 scholars just
completed, also a cook room and
room for the school teacher. So you
see we have quite an establish-
ment there. The front is on quite
a good street leading from San Ui
to Kong Mun a large trading place

of some 100,000 people 6 miles
away. From the back yard I
can step out and go away
off among the hills without seeing
scarcely any one.
We met to dedicate the
chapel Sabbath morning the day
after I got there. There were
16 grown up people present besides
the day school & we had a good
meeting. Afterwards the doors were
thrown open and preaching was
continued till 4-o-clock PM. The
next day there was preaching
from # eleven-o-clock until
four-o-clock. There were three
or four natives who spoke. I
went into the city and had
a very good time preaching to
a good audience on the street.
I expect to go down again
about the 1st of May and will
than organize a church. Eleven
have been baptized then and with
the native assistant makes 12. There

San Ui,
