Letters; Gifts; Family

Harriet writes to her mother about sleeping off her headache, and her joy that her family received the box of gifts she sent previously. She instructs her mother to tell her sister Martha to give the paper knife Harriet sent to Frank if not Mr. Fisher, and then explains that she did not reply to the long letter her sister Sarah sent because she assumed Sarah had enough old letters from China. She wishes her sister Emily well at Wooster, apologizes for not being able to write to everyone and closes expressing her gratitude at being made a life member of the "W.F.M.S."

My [u]own dear Mother[/u]
I slept off my headache
last night and got up in good
season this morning have written
one letter and now there are a
few minutes more so you shall
leave the "latest dates" from China
this time. I was glad to hear
you got the little box we sent you
I was beginning to fear it had
gone astray and you would
never see it. Before I forget
it about the paper knife. If Matt
should not care to give it to Fisher
I want Frank to have it.
If [u]she wants[/u] to give it to Mr F
it is all right but dont let her give
it to him [u]because we[/u] sent it for
him. I have another paper knife
to send to Frank if he [--has--] does
not have that one by the first
opportunity but I do not know
as it is as pretty as that.
I expect I just spoiled Matt's

dress by cutting off the five yards
However it is not fifty cents a yard
anyway I hope it will do her
some good. Sarah sent us
such a [u]good long[/u] letter sixteen
pages it is a shame not to send
any reply I know but I am
thinking by the time this reaches
U S A she will be at home and
if so have Enough old letters
from China to read to be
thankful not to have any
new ones. I was glad to get good
news from Em in Wooster. I
do [u]so much hope[/u] she will be
able to go there another year and
to graduate there if she wishes.
Do the Guilford people think
she is going to school on the
interest of Father's [u]surplus[/u] salary
or how do they think it is managed
now they have left us to take
care of ourselves. Sarah says
she meant to take Aunt Fay
home with her so perhaps

she is with you now If so
do give her my warmest love
and tell her I often think I
would like to write to her but
ca'nt make any promises.
Henry + I both felt that we
would like to write to Every one
of the family, by this mail
but it was [u]impossible[/u] tell
Clara that is the reason
there is no letter for her.
Well I suppose I must put up the
letters. If you see the "Woman's work"
you will perhaps notice that I
have been made a life member
of the "W.F.M.S." by the payment of
$25.00 by Rev H V Noyes. I am
very glad and hope to be able
to return the compliment
sometime . Now I must
say goodbye with an [u]immense[/u]
amount of love for you
all I am as ever
