Title
Letter from Hattie to Sarah (Sade), August 25, 1873
Subject
Missionaries; Family; Church work with families
Description
Harriet writes that she has not heard from Sarah in a long time. She apologizes for the pain the family must feel in Mattie leaving for China, but she and Henry are very excited to welcome her and Miss Crouch. They have friends who can meet them in San Francisco and Yokohama along the way, and Henry will meet them in Hong Kong. Harriet will stay behind to make sure they have a good welcome in Canton. She is very grateful their family has been able to live together for so long.

Aug 25th 1873.
My dear Sade,
It seems very nice
to have a letter from you to
answer once more. Do you
know it has been a long long
time since you have written
to us but then we have no room
for complaint. I think few
missionariEs are so favored
in getting letters from home
as we are, I have been thinking
all day about Mattie's leaving
home to-day for her trip East.
I am so glad she can go
and see the ladies but I
know you and she will
feel it hard that she
should be away from
home when there is so
little time left. We think
so much about her leaving
home, I know that at
the time of parting it is
hardest for those who stay
for those who come away
have the excitement of
travelling and meeting
with strangers to take
up their attention and
occupy their thoughts. But
you will think I know
about how happy we
shall be in welcoming
her. It is so nice that
she will have such pleasant
company and we are
so glad that you all
know and love Miss Crouch.
I am sure we shall have
such delightful times
together this coming winter.
Henry is quite proud
of his prospective family
He says it will consist of
"his sister and his other
sister and his friend".
We are writing letters by
the mail to meet them
in San Francisco and
will send letters to them
to Yokohama. Mr Loomis
who is a very dear friend
of mine will I am sure
do all in his power to
make their stay in
San Francisco pleasant.
I am writing to him
by this mail to tell him
of their coming and I
will also write to Mr Ballagh
at Yokohama and
their next port will be
Hongkong where Henry
will meet them. I would
go down to Hongkong too to
meet them but I think
it will be pleasanter for
them to have some one here
to receive them and you
may be sure I shall be
all ready. I cannot help
thinking how much pleasanter
they will find Every thing here
than Henry + Cynthia did
when they came or than I
did. Miss Shaw and Lillie
will be just like sisters for
them and I know they
will be so pleased with our
nice new houses and schoolhouse
and then the work seems
in such an Encouraging state.
I am sure they cannot help
being happy and you will
like to think of us as being
together. I was telling Henry
to-day that as a family we
have lived together more than
most families do. So many get
married young and are
scattered Early in life. But I
must close with much love for
all the dear ones from Hattie.
[Note: Additional note sideways in the left margin of page three]
You will see by the papers perhaps that Mr Loomis has
a wife and a "DD" both recently acquired.

Loomis
