Title

Letter from Hattie to Mary, October 21, 1873

Subject

Missionaries; Girls' school; Teaching; Methodist Missions (China)

Description

Harriet is thankful for everybody who helped raise money to buy an organ for the school. She tells Mary that the girls' school is full but the women's school is not. She is satisfied with the performance of two new teachers. Some missionaries are planning a trip to the North River. Harriet thinks she will not go on that trip just like she did not go to Macau with Mr. and Mrs. Graves because she feels that she should not leave the school.

Canton China
Oct 21st 1873
My dear Mary,
I have been writing
letters at rail-road speed this
evening and now I have arrived
at yours which was put at the
end of the line "last but not least"
you know , I only say this so as to
warn you that you will have
the dregs. But before writing any
thing else about one or two things
and one is the letter that I ought
to have written to the little girls
in the Sabbath School who want
to support a scholar in the school
Tell them that I have agreed
to take a girl into the school that
I think will do for them I expect
her to come tomorrow and then
I will write and tell them
about her, Another thing is I
do not feel as though I had
Ever half thanked any one
for the pains taken to get the
funds for purchasing an organ

for the school, I wanted you
know to thank them all nicely
and thought it would be
best to wait until we heard
that the instrument was
purchased. We have now heard
that it is on the way and
will probably reach here about
New Years Wont it be a nice
New Year's gift, But I will
write of this again. We are very
busy now.last week and this
we have been having two
meetings {and sometimes three}
every day which added to
our regular work fills the
day up very full, The Girl's
school is full now but the
school for women is not,
The two new teachers have
given very good satisfaction
thus far, We are expecting
a visit soon from Bishop
Harris and three other ministers

[Note: Entire page is oriented sideways]
They are visiting the Methodist missions and
I presume will arrange something here about
the one that is to be here. Mr Sites wrote to us
that they were waiting to find suitable men
We expected the to come some time since.
Henry is away in the country but only for three
days this time, will be home tomorrow. Some
of the missionaries are planning a trip up the
North River, I expect Henry will go and I
presume they will have a nice time but I
imagine it will hardly Equal our famous
picnic of last year, I would like to go very
much and they have all urged me very much
to go. Mr Preston even said he thought I would
go if I wanted to very bad which is cruel isnt
it for I would be delighted to go if I felt that I
could leave the school.

Mr + Mrs Graves wanted me
to go with them to Macau and
it was certainly a very nice
opportunity and I should have
enjoyed it immensely but I
am chained here.
You mention Helen Gray in
your letter Please give her my love
I shall never forget how much I
enjoyed going to their house when
I begun teaching school fourteen
years ago. I would like to
send my love to Eveline too
we were quite warm friends
once in the long ago, I have
just scribbled this letter but I
hope "it wont make much difference."
It is not very late but I am
very tired so I think I
must say good-night. Your
letter was finished after midnight
you mustnt take up my
bad habits. I have quite
reformed. Much love for all
from Hattie

Mary

Sites
Preston
/
/

Graves
Helen Gray
Hattie
